Michelle Obama’s Custom Tribute Attire Brings Barack to Tears During Date Night
Barack and Michelle Obama shared an affectionate evening out on June 16, attending a stakeholders event ahead of the upcoming grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
While on stage, Barack became visibly emotional after noticing a poignant detail in his wife's outfit. Michelle wore a custom midi-length skirt by Acne Studios designed to honor her late mother, Marian Robinson, who passed away in 2024 at age 86. The sepia-toned fabric featured a portrait of Robinson as a young woman. The tribute piece was put together by Michelle's longtime stylist, Meredith Koop, drawing inspiration from a similar design in Acne's Fall/Winter 2026 collection.
Michelle noted that this was the first time her husband had seen the garment in person, prompting a tender reaction as the couple held hands and shared a kiss on stage. Reflecting on his emotional response, Michelle explained that the skirt displayed her favorite portrait of her mother, an image she had grown accustomed to over the past few weeks before debuting it to him. She added that her mother would have been deeply proud of the tribute, which comes just days before the center's official opening.
