I had the pleasure of taking part in a very informative, engaging, and educational discussion about what has become known as “pay to play” anthologies. A few individuals who were not fully informed shared how they felt anyone who charges people to be a part of an anthology is preying or scamming authors. I was able to share my professional advice and findings on the subject matter, of which I’ve copied and pasted below.

Charging authors to be a part of an anthology is not always actually preying on people. It's sometimes used as a business model (often referred to as hybrid or collaborative publishing, which is a very legit form of publishing depending on the company) or an additional stream of income for the influencers and persons who have worked very hard (investing lots of time, effort, blood, money, sweat and tears) to build a platform, and they are now charging others to reap the benefits of their platform.

What are some of the things I share with my literary consulting clients:

When it comes to shipping out books or for everyday business use, I order branded shipping envelopes of various sizes (that usually just have my logo or book cover on them) and I order labels (that have my logo or book cover on them).

But I also order branded envelopes in which the brand is actually a built-in label (with my logo or book cover on it).

I was doing some cleaning and found this work of art I did a few years back.

Painting is a popular wind-down activity here in Las Vegas. We have everything from paint and sips (wine down) to puff and paints, to paint and punch.

I'm always telling my writer and author clients of poetry to have a "Poetry and Paint." Do anything but have a "reading, appearance, signing, or release."

If you don't display confidence when telling people about you, your business, your service, product, dreams, visions, message, movement, and goals, then nine times out of ten they are not going to be confident in sponsoring, collaborating, investing in, working with, partnering, or supporting you.

As a young girl, I can remember being a part of my local library district's Summer Reading Challenge program. I spent days in the air-conditioned branches escaping into the worlds authors took the time to create just for me. Sitting on the carpet listening to story time and author readings. And then to get rewarded with so many cool prizes for doing something that was kin to breathing was the cherry on top.

Fast-forward to when I became a teenage mom - and then an adult mom - summer days were spent as a family visiting the various library branches to participate in the different Summer Reading Challenge programs and offerings. The excitement on their faces when my children would earn a free ice-cream cone, or even a free admission to the local water park.

Eventually I, myself, was able to feel like a kid again when many library districts started including Summer Reading Challenges and programs for adults.

These are memories I hope to never forget. How many of you have these same types of memories that you hope to never forget? That you pray will forever take space in your brain? With June being "Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month", I'm reminded not to take the ability to remember these experiences for granted.

"Dear writers,

"Some of our biggest social media platforms seem to treat words as a pesky inconvenience, best to be moderated away from your awareness.

"But we're all here—you, I, the other people reading this newsletter—in part because we know that words matter, and writing is an essential part of being human. Whether to express ourselves or share some measure of what we've learned in our time on this planet, we know the simple act of writing things down is, at its core, a healthy one, a necessary one, an important one. I think this is even more true right now."

The above was the opening from my Medium newsletter, and I just happened to crack it open right after I had a conversation—or perhaps a debate—where someone was telling me: "People prefer short content. People don't like to read lots of words."

Now, when I hear people say that, it makes me cringe. But when I hear an actual writer or author say that . . .

Come on!

Seriously!

People will read—or listen to—long content when it's adding benefit and value to their lives.

So, whenever I encounter someone who drank the Kool-Aid and are convinced that people don't like words, my response is always the same: "'They' got to you, too, huh?"

And I always get the same reply: "Who are they?"

EXACTLY!

Might 'they' be the ones who control platforms that can only thrive on short content? So, if 'they' get you to believe you have a short attention span, it's a win-lose situation. 'They' being the winner.

"Well, according to algorithms . . ."

Whose algorithms?

"Theirs."

Oh, you mean 'they.'

"But studies show . . ."

Whose studies?

"Theirs"

Do you see where I'm going with this?

Anyway, thank you, Medium, for not trying to manipulate folks into thinking that words are pesky instead of priceless. Let's leave that to 'they.'

"EIGHT YEARS in the making, and it's FINALLY HERE!"

When I read those words from Pathfinder Lonna Hardin, who I consulted with during the pandemic, when books were deemed "non-essential," my spirit leaped.

Based on how determined and intentional this person was when she came to me for professional literary guidance, I pretty much knew what was to come in her message. But I continued reading anyway for confirmation.
