I respect this post.
Stop calling me AFAM!
I have a name. I have a story. I have a life here.
So please - stop calling me AFAM.
Let’s be honest: AFAM didn’t start as a neutral word.
It started as slang tied to money, sugar daddies, and stereotypes. That meaning didn’t magically disappear just because it became "common."
I didn’t move to the Philippines to become a label shouted across the street. I spent years respecting the culture, paying my way, and building a quiet life - only to be reduced to a word loaded with assumptions.
When you say AFAM, you’re often not just saying foreigner.
You’re implying money, privilege, motives, relationships.
That turns a person into a stereotype.
Calling someone AFAM creates distance.
Using a name creates respect.
This isn’t about being sensitive. It’s about basic human decency.
You don’t need perfect English. A simple "sir," "kuya," or better yet a name is enough.
The Philippines is known for warmth and hospitality.
That should include the words we choose.
So please.
Stop calling me AFAM.
I’m not a label. I’m a person.
