Baltimore, MD — Hip-Hop legend Rakim received the George Peabody Medal from Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute, becoming the first rapper ever to earn the conservatory’s highest honor.

The award, presented during Peabody’s 143rd graduation ceremonies, recognizes Rakim’s groundbreaking contributions to music and culture. He also addressed graduates, reflecting on hip-hop’s journey from the streets to prestigious institutions.

“To see this culture embraced in a place like this means everything — for me and future generations,” Rakim said.

The honor comes as Peabody launches a new Bachelor of Music program in Hip-Hop, marking a major milestone for the genre in academic music education.

While separate from the university’s 2025 honorary degrees, Rakim’s recognition highlights the growing respect for Hip-Hop’s cultural and artistic legacy.✨
