To my fellow contractors and kitchen designers:
We need to talk about something that's costing our clients thousands—and damaging our reputations.
The handoff mentality.
You know what I'm talking about. Designer creates plans, tosses them over the fence, and the contractor figures it out. Or contractor starts demo, and the designer shows up wondering why nothing looks like the renderings.
This approach is killing projects.
I've seen it create:
Change orders that destroy client trust
Timeline delays that ripple through schedules
Quality compromises nobody wanted
Relationships that end in frustration
Here's what's working instead:
Joint site assessments before designs are finalized
Not after. BEFORE.
Material selection conversations that include both perspectives
Beauty + buildability = better outcomes
Regular communication protocols throughout construction
Not just when problems arise
Shared responsibility for quality control
Two sets of expert eyes catch what one misses
Collaborative problem-solving when field conditions surprise us
They always do
The projects I'm proudest of? They all have one thing in common: a designer who respected my installation expertise, and me respecting their design vision.
We challenged each other. We problem-solved together. We made each other better.
And the client got a kitchen that exceeded expectations.
That's the competitive advantage none of us can afford to ignore.
Strong designer-contractor partnerships attract better clients, command higher fees, and generate referrals that build businesses.
Question for the pros: What's one collaboration practice that's transformed your projects?
Let's share what's working. 👇
