Calling all Govenerds! Sharon McMahon walks into In Walks a Woman, and we get to hear all about her new children’s book, We Are Mighty, published by and beautifully illustrated by gifted artist Susanna Chapman.

Big SHOUT OUT to and for making history come alive for young readers!

In this interview, Sharon talks about how she shaped her stories for children, what she sees as the “next needed thing” in how we teach history in America, and insights on how our gender influences whether we’re open to learn from men, or women, or both.

Plus, we get a little otherworldly in this one (cue the spooky music) as Sharon tells us about the story that changed the direction of her life.

We mention in this episode, and if you have not heard about this organization, you gotta go check them out!

Hallie Rubenhold’s The Five sheds light on the lives of the 5 women who were murdered by Jack the Ripper in London in 1888. So much of history has focused on these women’s deaths, the macabre nature of their wounds, and the assumption that they were all bad women who put themselves in harm’s way. In other words, since they were seen as fallen women, they were in essence blamed for their own murders. Join us for Episode 10 of our Fallen Women Season as we get into this amazingly researched history by to whom the world owes a debt of gratitude. 🔍🌌🌂

What if there were a supernatural force taking vengeance on men who mistreated women? Would you be on board? In her new atmospheric thriller, Laurie Dove, takes us deep into a world of lore, spirits, and creatures from childhood stories who we assume are not real…but are they?

Young women are disappearing, and ex-Chicago detective, Carrie Starr, has to find out who–or what–is responsible, all while coming to terms with her own daughter’s death. Listen to this great interview with the author about what sparked the idea for the novel, her own life story, and her questions about how we define justice.

Transcendentalist male writers prided themselves on going it alone: Henry David Thoreau claimed he lived alone by a lake 🦆for 2 years, and Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote that a man needed to be self-reliant…but was Emerson self-reliant? Or was he reading someone else’s writing for inspiration🧐? And was that “someone” a woman? In our May 1st episode with Dr. Randall Fuller, an expert in the field, we discuss some stunning investigative scholarship, revealing that the manly Transcendentalist movement was made and advanced by quite a few brave, bright, generous women.
