Free State:

Free State girls finished tied for 5th in the 6A team race, landing just 5 points away from a top-3 finish.

Sadie Reynolds led the way with her state championship in the girls discus, her second straight year as the 6A champ in this event. Reynolds won with her best throw of 145 feet, 4 inches. She’ll return as a senior next year, looking to improve upon her PR of 151 feet, 2 inches from the state meet in 2025. Reynolds got close to matching that back in late April when she had a throw of 151 feet, 1 inch at the Firebird-hosted Leitel Legacy Invitational.

Beatrice Essman and Parker Jones earned state runner-up finishes.

Essman took 2nd in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 58.07. She would have need to match her 56.85 from prelims to have bested the eventual champ, as Blue Valley’s Maria Portela ran a 56.98 in the finals. Both runners are juniors.

Jones took 2nd in the girls long jump with a leap 18 feet, 5.75 inches. She ended up 5.25 inches short of winning mark by Olathe North’s Sienna Wesley.

Grace Toner took 3rd in the girls 800-meter race. Toner also took 7th in the 1600 meter and anchored Free State in the 4x800, taking 8th alongside Taylor Hulcher, Mady Whitney and Nadia Karapuda.

Hulcher ended with a collection of medals as well. In addition to the 4x800 finish, Hulcher earned 5th running the 2nd leg of the 4x400 alongside Aiyanna Moss, Peyton Moore, Essman. Moss also took 5th in the 400 meter.

On the boys side, Toby Kwan took 5th in the long jump. Jasper Hansen Terry finished with a pair of medals, one as individual and one as a member of the team’s 4x800 relay. Anderson Bateman, Nicholas Johnson, Joseph Clossen and Hansen Terry finished 7th in that relay. Hansen Terry also finished 8th in the 800 meter.

Lawrence High:

Lawrence High put three individual competitors and one relay team on the podium.

Tyler Dye delivered the Lions best finish by placing 3rd in boys javelin. Layla Simmons had the best finish on the girls side as she took 4th in the long jump. Devin Foster took 6th in the boys shot put.

In the boys 4x400-meter relay, the team of Nick Palmer, Oliver Schwartz, Garret Rhea and Truth Pope took 7th in the final event of a state meet with multiple weather delays at the end of Day 2. Those 4x400 runners also set the team’s top time in the event this season by running a 3.22.78 in prelims. As the anchor, Pope delivered a 48.21 split, which was the fastest of any of the state runners who did not run the opening leg in the event.

Andie Garrett and Joey Dooley also narrowly missed earning medals at state. Garrett finished 9th in the girls 1600-meter run while Dooley finished 9th in the shot put, with his best throw being just 2 feet, 5 inches away from that of the next best competitor.

End of an era:

Since opening its doors 3 decades ago, Free State has only had 1 head baseball coach.

Mike Hill has decided to hand over his job to someone new. He does so at a time when the program is as successful as ever.
