Free State senior running back Maddon Brittingham scored three touchdowns in the first half, including a 62-yard touchdown reception thrown by senior quarterback Finn Moore.

Moore also rushed for multiple touchdowns in the second half, including a 1-yard score in the final minute to end the game with an exclamation point after Blue Valley West tried to put a question mark on the Firebirds performance with a 2nd half comeback attempt by the Jaguars.

After Free State took a commanding 28-3 following Moore’s 28-yard touchdown run midway through the 3rd quarter, Blue Valley West responded with a touchdown drive and quick takeaway to reach the red zone less than a minute later.

Blue Valley West would quickly find itself setup on 1st and goal from 2-yard line, only for a Jude Dowdle sack to cause a 23-yard loss and ultimately force the Jaguars to kick a 43-yard field goal near the end of the 3rd quarter.

Free State would match those 3 points with an 25-yard field goal from AJ Kimzey, which the Firebirds set up thanks to a 52-yard run by Moore.

Blue Valley West responded again with another scoring drive, cutting the Firebirds lead to 31-20 with just over 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The Jaguars went for an onside kick, but Free State proved more than ready with a quick recovery.

The Firebirds put together a scoring drive, culminating in that final touchdown by Moore to cap off the 38-20 victory.

After a 2-week road stand to start the season, Free State will finally play in its home opener when the Firebirds host Gardner Edgerton next Friday.

Eudora’s boys team earned a 5th-place finish in Class 4A, while the Cardinals also took 7th on the girls side.

The Eudora boys 4x100-meter relay won a 4A state title as Hayden Marsh, Preston White, Lyrik Langley and Cameren Tice ran a 42.55 to hold off runner-up Andale at 42.64. The Cardinals had also earned the top time in prelims, that time 0.20 seconds ahead of same upset-minded quartet.

Tice also delivered a state runner-up finish in the 200 meter dash and a 3rd-place finish in the 100 meter.

Joining Tice as state runners-up, Brady Von Holten took 2nd in the boys discus while Brenika Rader did the same in the girls high jump.

Faith Lorenzo, Brynn Deterding, Addison Lewis and Izzy Brunkow delivered the team a 3rd-place finish in the girls 4x400 relay. Deterding took 3rd in the 300-meter hurdles while Brunkow achieved the same in the pole vault. Brunkow also anchored the girls 4x100 relay as Bailey Hammerschmidt, Lewis and Avery Warren joined her to finish 5th in that race.

Cage Crabill earned a 4th-place finish in the boys shot put.

George Hagan and Grayson Masterson both earned 5th-place medals, Hagan in the boys triple jump and Masterson in the boys 3200 meter. Masterson added to his collection with a 7th-place finish in the 1600 meter.

Rounding out Eudora’s medals haul, Brock Long took to the podium for the boys discus while Colton Bowser did so in the boys pole vault. Both Long and Bowser placed 5th in their respective events.
