MDCA Athletic Director Megan Ziegelhofer Named FHSAA Female Educator of the Year

Mount Dora Christian Academy Senior Director of Athletics Megan Ziegelhofer has been named the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Female Educator of the Year, the organization announced.

The award recognized Megan’s leadership in fostering both athletic excellence and academic priority among student-athletes. Under her guidance, MDCA has emphasized an environment where competitors are pushed to perform at a high level while developing character and faith.

Coach Ziegelhofer, known affectionately as Coach Z, has built a reputation for leading with vision, integrity and a deep investment in the lives of young people. Whether supporting coaches, encouraging students, celebrating successes or addressing challenges, she models servant leadership and purposeful direction.

In her role, Coach Z stresses the importance of academics as the foundation for success at the next level.

“There are too many stories of students who forget that in order to be successful at the next level both on and off the field academics come first, so we really try and hit on this point,” she says.

Effective communication is another cornerstone of her approach to athletic administration.

“It takes effective communication to be an athletic director,” Ziegelhofer explains. “I want to ensure that when people visit our campus, they know exactly what to do and where to go.”

She routinely sends welcome emails to visiting schools that include campus maps, directions, facility information and lists of what each team needs to bring. Ziegelhofer notes that game operations, often taken for granted by parents and spectators, require extensive behind-the-scenes planning where lapses in communication can create significant problems.

“Game Night and everything it entails” doesn’t happen by magic, she says. “There are so many steps in that game planning process for every game where poor communication or no communication can really throw a wrench into things.”

Second Chick-fil-A Location Set to Open Thursday in Mount Dora 🐮

Mount Dora’s second Chick-fil-A restaurant, located at 19360 Highway 441, is set to open Thursday morning, but the celebration began days earlier with a dedication service, ribbon cutting and VIP preview event.

The new Golden Groves Chick-fil-A will officially open at 6:30 a.m. Thursday. To mark the occasion, guests who wear cow print to the restaurant’s grand opening will receive a free entrée.

On Sunday, restaurant leaders gathered to dedicate the new location to God. The following day, invited guests, first responders, local officials and Chick-fil-A VIP fans were given a first look inside during a special soft opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Operator Rick Powell told attendees that faith and service are at the heart of the restaurant’s mission.

“Last night, we had friends and family here to dedicate this restaurant to the service of the Lord,” he said during Monday’s event. “And that’s something that here at Chick-fil-A we take really, really personally.”

Rick says Chick-fil-A’s purpose extends beyond serving food.

“We are rooted in our purpose and known for our care at Chick-fil-A Mount Dora,” he says. “Our purpose at Chick-fil-A is to glorify God by being a faithful steward of his resources and to have a positive influence in all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A.”

Rick said he looks forward to continuing that mission at Mount Dora Golden Groves.

As part of the opening celebration, Chick-fil-A presented a $25,000 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. Rick says the gift reflects the company’s commitment to caring for others and addressing food insecurity.

School Board Approves Plan to Combine Leesburg Middle Schools

The Lake County School Board voted 3-0 Monday night to move forward with a plan to combine Oak Park Middle School and Carver Middle School into a single comprehensive middle school on the Carver campus beginning with the 2027-28 school year. Board members Marc Dodd and Dr. Stephanie Luke were absent.

The approval follows a May 27 workshop where district staff presented the concept, as well as community open house meetings held June 2 at Oak Park Middle School and June 4 at Carver Middle School. District leaders met with parents, staff, students, community members and representatives from Leesburg Community Association to discuss the proposal and gather feedback.

Deputy Superintendent Chad Farnsworth told board members the response from the community was positive.

"We had good attendance and had parents come out and had a few students," he says. "We had staff members, community members, representatives from LCA. The overall consensus was enthusiastic."

District leaders say combining the two schools will provide students with expanded academic and extracurricular opportunities by bringing together resources, staff and programs on one campus.

Currently, enrollment at both schools limits the number of electives and specialized programs that can be offered. Under the approved plan, students could gain access to additional opportunities such as culinary arts, digital design, robotics and other courses connected to Career and Technical Education pathways available at Leesburg High School. The district is also exploring the addition of Pre-AICE coursework to help prepare students for the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education program offered at the high school level.

"I think everybody realizes the commitment that we have, making sure that those middle school students of Leesburg area are able to have all the available opportunities that they deserve and enhance programs," Farnsworth says. "I think it's really going to be a great change."

The board's action also allows the district to begin the design and construction process needed to prepare the Carver campus for the transition. Plans include converting space into a new media center, remodeling Building 6 into classroom space and expanding the campus by approximately 100 student stations. Demolition of the future media center area is expected to begin in July.

Principals from both schools appeared before the board wearing matching "Stronger Together" shirts and voiced their support for the project.

Men of Success 2026 – Duct-Man Mechanical 🇺🇸

Duct-Man Mechanical has built its reputation through hard work, integrity and word-of-mouth recommendations from thousands of satisfied customers across the community over the last 20 years.

Owner Quan Nguyen has spent decades growing the HVAC company into a trusted name across Lake and Sumter counties. With more than 7,500 clients and years of industry experience, the business continues to grow while staying rooted in strong family values and customer relationships.

Recently, Quan stepped away temporarily to fulfill a lifelong dream of joining the United States Air Force, becoming the oldest recruits to enlist without a waiver. While away at boot camp and technical school, Duct-Man Mechanical has continued thriving thanks to the support of family, employees and the community that has stood behind the business for years.

General Manager and brother-in-law Tim Rollins has continued overseeing day-to-day operations, while Quan’s son, Ty-Bryant, has stepped up in a major way to help run the company while his stepfather serves.

Quan says the company was built on the same core values emphasized in the Air Force: integrity first, service before self and excellence in all they do.

Even while Quan is away serving his country, the business continues moving forward with the same commitment that helped build its reputation over the last two decades.

With strong community support and a family-driven team leading the way, Quan says the future looks brighter than ever.

Did you feel it??? Reports are coming in from people who felt the rumble of an earthquake that happened 450 miles away.

Lake County officials have closed all county offices for the remainder of the day following a 6.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Cuba that was felt across portions of Florida.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake struck near Mantua, Cuba, Monday afternoon. Residents across Florida, including some in Central Florida, reported feeling shaking and tremors. Lake County announced the closure "out of an abundance of caution" due to conditions experienced locally.

Officials say there is no tsunami threat associated with the earthquake.

Many county services remain available online through LakeCountyFL.gov.

From Corner Tavern to Local Legend, One Irish Pub Stays Grounded in Family ☘️

O’Keefe’s has been a constant in Tavares for more than 40 years, long before the county seat became known as “America’s Seaplane City” and the waterfront was revitalized.

As the Lake Region Packing Association along Lake Dora kept the city economy running with three shifts a day, O’Keefe’s became part of the routine in 1984.

“We were just a city pool hall and a tavern in the early days,” says owner Andrew O’Keefe. “The plant workers and city employees were our main customers.”

Andrew’s dad, Frank, converted the building that was originally a post office into the Town Tavern. It evolved into O’Keefe’s Irish Pub a few years later after Andrew took over.

Legend has it the idea for Tavares’ waterfront renewal started with city officials and a couple of seaplane pilots right there in the dining room over a beer and a burger.

Since the beginning, the O’Keefe family has grown alongside the business. Andrew’s wife, Jennifer, handles the business side, and their four kids have all worked there. His brother Terence has been behind the taps for nearly 30 years, and extended family members have all contributed hours. His mom, Marcia, still pops in to visit.

“I guess when you have a big family, it makes for a great labor pool,” Andrew says.

Family presence is a big reason O’Keefe’s has so many regulars. A simple approach of good, consistent food and a reliable experience has also contributed to decades of success.
