They flew P-40 Warhawks painted with massive shark teeth on the nose. They were outnumbered by the Japanese air force but fought with incredible aggression. They were paid a bounty of $500 for every Japanese plane they shot down. They became global celebrities, proving that the Japanese war machine could be beaten.

On February 8, 1931, James Dean was born in Indiana. He only made three movies (East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, Giant) before dying at age 24. Yet, he is the universal symbol of teenage angst. He was so nearsighted he was practically blind without his glasses. He was also fascinated by death; he famously did a PSA for driving safety saying, "Take it easy, the life you save might be mine." Just weeks before he died in a Porsche crash. He lived fast, died young, and left a beautiful co**se.

In 1917, the US Navy needed sailors. So, they built a battleship in Union Square, New York City. The USS Recruit was a full-scale, 200-foot-long battleship made of wood. It had wooden guns, wooden turrets, and a full crew of real sailors who lived on board, scrubbed the wooden decks, and did laundry in front of confused pedestrians. It was a "landship." It never sailed an inch, but it "recruited" 25,000 men who walked up the gangplank right off the sidewalk.

Even decades later, locals claimed you could still smell molasses on hot summer days. One of the deadliest industrial disasters in history… was caused by molasses.

On January 24, 1961, a B-52 bomber broke apart in mid-air over Goldsboro, North Carolina. It dropped two Mark 39 hydrogen bombs. Each bomb was 250 times more powerful than Hiroshima. One of the bombs deployed its parachute and landed gently. The other slammed into a muddy field. On the first bomb, three of the four safety switches failed. Only one cheap low-voltage switch prevented the bomb from detonating. If that single switch had shorted out, the entire East Coast would have been changed forever.
