Cinder - The Pitbull/Staffy Mix 🐾 NHA Alum | Advocate for Building Awareness about Dog Behavioral Struggles 🐾 I am a rescue from Nashville Humane Association (NHA). Turtle.

I was picked up as a stray in Palmetto, FL. However, due to Hurricane Ian, I was transferred to Nashville, TN. Once there, I quickly became an employee and volunteer favorite! I was briefly adopted, but was found two days later on the streets and taken back to NHA. In the beginning of December 2022, I finally found my furever family! Since being adopted, my family has worked with me through a lot of my trauma and behavioral issues. I struggle with anxiety, aggression, and reactivity. Despite my issues, I have given my family a bunch of joy. I am a sweetheart, cuddle bug, and I am an enthusiastic loyal companion. My favorite toy is my stuffed Kong turtle, Mr. I must have him by my side at all times. I would give anything (except Mr. Turtle) for a pretzel. Plus, I am a proud muzzle trained pup and love my custom teal Leerburg.

We are completely devastated to share that Cinder recently passed away, on Saturday, August 15th.

We understand that this news may feel sudden and incredibly sad, just as it has been for us. Words cannot express how meaningful she was to us and how heartbroken we are now feeling without her.

During this immense loss, we kindly ask for privacy and space as we grieve. Thank you all so much for supporting Cinder and us over the years. We hope she touched your heart even slightly as much as she did ours. 💔

There are so many layers to dogs with behavioral struggles that people outside of their lives often never get to see.

Social media might show you a cute picture of Cinder, but it doesn’t show the panic attacks, licking fits, triggers, setbacks, management, or the work that goes into helping her feel safe.

But it also doesn’t capture all the other things we get to see.

The silly, affectionate, cuddly, loving, loyal girl underneath it all.

It’s easy to see a dog’s reaction and label them as
“aggressive,” “anxious,” or “bad.” It’s harder to stop and wonder what they’re actually experiencing, and remember that their behavior is only one part of who they are.

And honestly, having a behaviorally challenged dog can be really hard. It can be exhausting, frustrating, isolating, and heartbreaking. But their struggles don’t diminish the value of the dog, or the person trying their best to help them.

If you have a dog struggling with anxiety, reactivity, or aggression, you are not alone. And if you haven’t lived with a dog like this, I encourage you to ask questions, resist judgment, and empathize with the dog (and the person) behind the behavior.

Because cute pictures don’t mean a cute reality.

But a difficult reality doesn’t mean there isn’t a whole lot of love and joy in it, too.

My mom took this picture of me and we have an issue. I was mortified to see fur discoloration? (My mom said I had grays?) Has anyone dealt with this crisis before? I rolled around in the mud to try and fix it, but they’re still here 🙈 I’m too young for this s**t
