A significantly revised draft ordinance to boost Sussex County’s affordable housing program was outlined at the June 2 county council meeting. Council discussed revisions to an earlier draft of changes to Sussex County Rental Program guidelines and minor alterations to another law that sets requirements for development plans submitted to the county for approval. Draft ordinances are expected to be amended and presented at the next meeting Tuesday, June 9, for a possible final vote, said County Administrator Todd Lawson.

The Grace Peterson Act, inspired by a violent 2023 crime against a Seaford woman, would require a "warm handoff" and discharge plan before someone can be removed from state-funded reentry housing. The bill also closes a loophole that exempts some landlords from the Landlord-Tenant Code by claiming they provide counseling services. Officials said the gap excludes tenants from warnings or a court hearing before they are evicted.

Birdhouse Rotisserie Chicken and Market on Route 16 in Milton officially opened its doors May 27. The space includes a dinner-only restaurant with a focus on rotisserie chicken-related dishes and a small market serving up fresh produce and take-home meals.
Owner Ami Rae said she decided to start Birdhouse after customers at her other Route 16 restaurant, the Backyard, asked for dinner. The space had formerly been occupied by Beaches Seafood and underwent renovations to fit Rae’s vision.

Delmarva Christian School staff, students, family and friends came together May 27, to celebrate the completion of the school's $30 million Stronger Together capital campaign, which aims to unite all students, from children 2 years old through 12th grade, on one campus by fall 2027.

Delmarva Christian launched its Stronger Together Campaign in summer 2022. It surpassed its $30 million fundraising goal in March, garnering nearly $30.1 million. But due to rising construction costs, increased scholarship needs and investments in high-quality athletic fields, playgrounds and other features, school officials quickly realized they would need to secure another $5 million to do the project in cash as they wanted.

The matrix of muppets showed up May 31 at Cape Henlopen State Park for the 19th annual Race for the Ribbon 5K. Luke Burton, a 21-year-old former Cape lacrosse player then leading scorer at Flagler College, was honored with love and community support. Burton is undergoing treatments for Ewing's sarcoma. He was there as honorary starter, looking a little frail and pale, but after sounding the Dewalt airhorn, he jumped right into the run, as did his immediate family, including parents Rick and Kim, and sister Allaire. There were lacrosse players, both men and women, up and down the roster of the 250 finishers.

Delaware’s appeal to withhold a federal request for employment records of 15 businesses was ended May 28, after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit refused to hear the motion.

In a statement following the decision, Attorney General Kathleen Jennings and Gov. Matt Meyer said the order requires the Delaware Department of Labor to provide the documents. “The court has spoken, and with no viable alternative before us, the state must honor its ruling – but this was a fight worth losing on our feet,” she said. “This was not just a question of what the law demands, but also of what our conscience permits. We cannot pretend that the legal question is narrowly limited to just a handful of employers and records; the context and intent of the policy behind it is inseparable from the demand itself. The federal government is using its subpoena authority as a fig leaf for naked racial profiling."

As part of an effort to beautify downtown Milton, members of the Milton Arts Guild painted new, strawberry-themed murals in, where else, Strawberry Alley. The alley runs behind the brick building on Federal Street where the art guild is located and runs back toward the fire hall.

Painter Jeff Crawford, who did the center mural of a parrot eating a strawberry, said the idea came to him during walks through the alley and wanting to make the wall more inviting. Crawford was one of the artists who worked on the murals at Milton Coffee Roastery on Lavinia Street, and two of the artists from that project, Crawford and Michael Ng, worked on the Strawberry Alley mural. The third mural was painted by former Councilwoman Randi Meredith.

If Gov. Matt Meyer had announced 16 months ago there would be a medical school in Delaware, he said, everyone would have thought he was crazy.

But healthcare professionals from across the state applauded his announcement June 2, that Delaware’s first medical school will be coming soon to the University of Delaware in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University.“It will take its first class of students in the summer of 2028,” he said to a crowd of supporters outside Westside Family Healthcare in Dover. “If you know someone who is a junior in college, in Delaware or elsewhere, who wants to go to medical school, they’ll have a place to apply in Delaware.” The first class will include 40 students, and if they all commit to practicing medicine in rural Delaware, Meyer said their education will be a free ride.

Blue was the color of the evening at a May 30 celebration recalling the Happy Day Club in Lewes. The Once in a Blue Moon event relived the legacy of the club, which was located at West Fourth Street and DuPont Avenue. American Legion Post 17 was transformed to recreate the flavor the popular club, with blue decor, R&B music from the Christy Taylor Band, and everyone was urged to wear their favorite shade of blue. The Happy Day Club became a safe haven for the city's African American community from the 1940s to the 1970s. It was a place where people gathered for civic meetings and where Black entertainers could perform in the era of segregation.
