The Dewey Beach Board of Adjustment approved three requests for variances from the town code Nov. 5. The first two requests were submitted by Heather Morrison, architect of record, for 1601 Coastal Hwy., located at the corner of Read Avenue and Coastal Highway, the former location of Grotto Pizza. One was to permit the installation of impervious material, as well as the permitted pervious material, for a driveway and parking area for a mixed-use residential and commercial structure. The other was to permit the construction of four enclosed residential garages on the first floor of the mixed-use structure.

Due to brick work needed after bollards and swing gates are installed near the Bandstand, the cost of Rehoboth Beach’s pedestrian safety project has increased by $200,000. Brick paver work is extremely expensive and it’s all brick pavers at the end of Rehoboth Avenue, said Assistant City Manager Evan Miller, during a special city commissioners meeting Nov. 10.

A little over a month ago, the city announced it was moving forward with a multi-phase pedestrian security project. The first phase of the project includes the installation of nearly 70 bollards; a short, vertical post used to block off areas and control traffic; and two swing gates in the area around the Bandstand and Boardwalk. At the time, the city estimated the cost of the first phase to be $1.1 million.

A bill to change Delaware’s tax code, separating it from federal code, passed the House Nov. 13 by a 26-13 vote with two absent. House Bill 255 to decouple Delaware’s tax code from the federal tax code was considered during an extraordinary session requested by Gov. Matt Meyer over what his administration says would be a $400 million revenue shortfall over the next few years from tax breaks given by the Trump Administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Two amendments were added to the bill.

The Dewey Beach Finance Committee recommended to town council Nov. 3, a change to the town’s fund balance policy. The policy, adopted in May 2021, ties the town’s Rainy Day Fund and Unassigned Fund balances to percentages of the operating budget. It requires the Rainy Day and Unassigned balances to equal 50% and 15%, respectively, of the current-year operating budget, a challenge because the budget fluctuates throughout the year.

The group that eight years ago compiled a list of 78 projects to untangle the knot of roads in the Five Points area outside Lewes ended its work Nov. 10 with many of the goals met.

“We want to make it clear, we’re not done,” state Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Shanté A. Hastings said at the final meeting of the Five Points Working Group. “There are still projects in the pipeline, and there are still studies we can do.” Of the original 78 recommendations, 76 are completed or at least in the planning phase; although, some are years from construction or final solutions.

A packed audience attended Dogfish Head in Milton Nov. 12, for a presentation regarding a possible connection to the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail that would run through Milton. “There’s no way to get to Milton safely,” said Jason King of Dogfish Head. “Fortunately, we have a lot of stakeholders in the community that are interested in getting this trail here.” The Delaware Department of Transportation is looking to do a feasibility study on the trail, to both determine the best route and to put a cost figure on the trail.
