We often receive comments about how happy Wilson is. And yes, he is generally a very happy child. But I would be remiss if I made it sound like every day is all smiles and giggles.Â
The one thing Wilson struggles with most is change. We canât move an item in the house or abruptly change plans without him struggling with it. If we have time to prepare him for a big change, we can usually avoid some stress. But when something comes out of the blue it hits him harder than what you might expect.
Before you ask, Wilson does not have a dual diagnosis of down syndrome and autism. However his DS diagnosis does sometimes carry similar traits to those with autism, much like we just experienced.
Last night before bed we realized our upstairs AC wasnât working. It was a little warmer than usual, but not unbearable so we put an extra fan in Wilsonâs room to circulate the air until we could have it repaired today. (We live in the south, so there is already a ceiling fan on most of the year.) It was just small fan, sitting on his dresser. No biggie, right? Wrong.
The sobbing immediately began if one of us wasnât in there to sleep with him. Requests to go to a hotel were made. Yâall, it was 77 degrees in his room. A tad warmer than we usually keep it, but by no means unbearable or hotel worthy. He fretted, even with us in there, until about midnight when Steve gave in and took him downstairs. You might ask why we didnât do that to begin with. Well, because Wilson wonât sleep anywhere but his own bed. So from midnight on he was full speed ahead, having a full on living room party and insisting he was excited for school. No couch napping for any of us.
Something that is a minor inconvenience to most of us completely rocks his world.
So, today, we wish patience for his teachers and an extra cup of coffee for Mama and Daddy. Yes life with Wilson is always an adventure, just not always in the ways you might imagine.Â
Cheers, yâall. âď¸
