SU***DE PREVENTION WALK- On Friday August 29th, a group of volunteers met at the Wayne County Courthouse to start the 15 mile trek south on US Highway 27 to the Union County Courthouse in an effort to bring awareness to the su***de epidemic that plagues both Wayne and Union Counties.
The organizer of this event was Joshua Kegley an Army Veteran of 22-years. According to Joshua, he has seen a rise in su***des in young people and also in veterans. Sadly,Joshua has had 12 family members die due to su***de. Those accompanying Josh on his su***de prevention walk were his brother James Kegley, and friends Jason Burkhardt and Kim Wesner. The group was escorted by Richmond Police chief Kyle Weatherly and Officer Aaron Stevens to the Union County line; then, Union County Sheriff Jeff Adams escorted the group to the courthouse square in Liberty. This is Joshua’s second year organizing this event.
The first year the walk took place only in Richmond, but this year he decided to take it outside of Richmond. He believes by linking both counties, and having a su***de prevention hotline available, it will help to cut down on this
horrible pattern.
When asked, why he believes there is a rise in su***des? Joshua said, it could be several things but too many young people feel alone and are hesitant to reach out. He continued, others may not notice that you are withdrawn. With women, they see themselves as nurturers and feel they need total care of others, and thus, take less care of themselves. Joshua would like to have a “YOUR LIFE MATTERS/SU***DE PREVENTION AWARENESS” group in Union County that could help with screening young people, and older people alike. Kegley hopes this could help to stop this evil pattern that seems to be overtaking our two counties.
