HV Draa - RIP

We got the very sad news yesterday that our friend HV passed away. God bless you HV and our prayers go out to Joyce and the whole family. HV was our first 40 Over 80 interview. He was kind, generous, and had a terrific sense of humor. Thank you, HV, may you rest in peace.

BIG thank you to everyone who came out to 58 Below today to listen to a great set by the Curious JimmyC Band. It was a terrific afternoon! In the spirit of the Cafe, the band passed the hat and in a short ten minutes the generous guests donated $500 bucks to the folks at ELCA Outreach Center. Check out the important work they are doing for folks in Kenosha here 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻. Thank you everyone!

Craftsman Interview w/ Don Londergon from Blue Ribbon

Don Londergon, CEO of Blue Ribbon Products (of Joliet, IL) discusses his family's history in the beer biz. One of many stories I enjoyed hearing was about Don's grandma, Elva. She was an amazing woman....hard to comprehend how hard it would have been to take over the business at the time and under the cuircumstancs she did. This is part 1. Thanks Don!

John Anderson to speak at ELCA Outreach Center Spring Benefit

A lot of people who attended our last show raved and asked about “the guy on vocals.” That guy is John Anderson and since he had a write up in the paper on Sat we wanted to share. John is a husband to wife Andrea and the father of three boys, and will graduate with a master’s in divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He began a yearlong pastoral internship at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in January.

I love this quote from the article:

“Do justice. Love kindness. Walk humbly with God. So simple. But, if you think it is easy, you have never tried it,” he explained. “One thing: it’s never done. You can’t be kind once and then you have met your kindness obligation. You can’t shovel one person’s driveway and then you can check mercy off your list. And doing justice: well, all you can do is make progress, fail, step back, go forward, fail again. Sometimes you think you have done justice, and later you realize that you just made things a worse mess. But you get up and try again. I suppose that is where humility comes in.”

Amen John!

John Anderson — an educator, musician, youth minister, seminarian and pastoral intern — will be the guest speaker for the sixth annual ELCA Outreach Center Spring Benefit fundraising event May

Thanks to all of our guests and show contributors that made our Craftsman Cafe show 'John Hammond, Revealed' possible. We made a splash and the ripple effect is considerable! Voluntary donations amount to nearly $31,000 and is being passed on to The Sports Shed . The Sports Shed helps under resourced schools and organizations get the sports gear they need. Sports challenges us in so many positive ways, and of course, teaches us to work as a team. Keep up the good work Sports Shed and thanks to all! #community #sports #teamwork

This guy. Our guests enjoyed fresh, tasty sandwiches from Burnsies Uptown at last night’s Cafe show. We are very conservative with our food orders since we hate to waste food and prefer to run out. John had a hunch....so unbeknownst to me he shows up again about 9:45pm last night with a dozen pies from Pizzeria DeVille that were devoured in minutes. Literally, minutes. I was preoccupied with an issue during that time and when it was resolved I grabbed another beer. Our bartender said to me, “hey man, those pizzas were outstanding. Where did you get them?” I thought he was confused. I said, “we didn’t get pizzas, you talking about the sandwiches?” He laughed and said, “oh man, you missed it. Some guy came in here with about 10 pies and served ‘em up hot!” Thank you for supporting the Cafe John Durning!!!! #sneaky

Thanks to a few SUPER generous friends we are happy to say we are in the process of producing a show and have landed on a couple key components. One, we will be celebrating the life of legendary producer and music man John Hammond. Hammond signed each of these artists and much, much more. He led an incredible life in music and was instrumental in integrating black and white musicians (Benny Goodman's band). In short, he's a man worth celebrating and we love a good music educational component to our shows. We had so much fun sharing Andy Warhol a few shows back. Second, we will be supporting the terrific work of The Sports Shed at this show and are thrilled to be making new friends as we plan this special event. The show will be held in a newly remodeled warehouse somewhere in Libertyville. We promise it will be a unique experience for all. We are excited!

John Hammond is someone all music fans should know. Here's an excerpt from an interview with the man himself:

"Aretha is really one of the fascinating stories, because at that time [1960] I was sort of living in the past, you know. I was saying, gee there’s never been another singer like Billie Holiday or Bessie Smith, whom I had recorded in the early days.

But I’ve always been a freak for gospel music. So one day a songwriter named Curtis Lewis came in with a demo of about five of his tunes. The third tune was a thing called “Today I Sing the Blues,” and it was just this girl on piano. And I screamed! I said for Chrissakes who is this? He said: “She’s a 17 year old girl from Detroit.” And I said can she do anything else, and he said she was a gospel singer who sang with her father’s choir with Sam Cooke.

So I said, uh-oh, if RCA ever finds out about her, I’m in great trouble. It took me a while to find out where she worked, because I knew it was in Detroit, and I hadn’t heard the greatest things about the old man, the Reverend C. L., but I had his records on Chess, so I knew that he was a good artist in his own right.

Finally a woman by the name of Jo King, wonderful person, became Aretha’s manager. And she got Aretha to make a full demo, and this time I was even more knocked out.
