Our summer announcements continue with our Teen Acting Initiative in July! This 3-day program for ages 13-17 introduces students to foundational concepts for scene study, audition techniques, and physical acting. Students explore movement and improvisation in a supportive environment and learn skills for working with a scene partner. The program also includes an introduction to acting for film and television.

Through a combination of group work and individual instruction, teachers work generously with each student. Actors are assigned material and may spend time preparing outside of class. This program is instructed by Artistic Director of Studio Playground, Matthew Bretschneider. Students of all abilities and levels of experience are encouraged to join.

There is something special about teaching clowning and physical theater for both children and adults. For actors in training, we focus on giving more value to our enthusiasm than our inner critic. That’s often when I see actors experience empowerment. For children (and for adults) empowerment comes from being seen, heard & accepted. If we can bottle that feeling and bring it onstage, hundreds of people won’t stop dreaming about the characters we play.

After 5 years, we realize this is more than just a summer camp. It’s a community. We saw our students take brave little steps, followed by giant leaps of growth. For some, we saw the transition from elementary to middle school. It has been an honor and a privilege to watch them grow up over 5 summers. laugh. sing. make a beautiful ruckus.
