“Still We Heard the Chains”
A Juneteenth Poem

They told us we were free,
but the chains still clung—
rusted links of silence
where truth should’ve been sung.

Two years late the word arrived,
blown in on a Texas breeze,
a promise carried on blue coats’ backs,
through dust, despair, and trees.

We had already wept enough rivers
to baptize the land,
already built a nation
with our bloodied hands.

They kept freedom locked in papers
we never got to read,
while we waited in the fields,
still bowing to the greed.

But we danced anyway.
We praised anyway.
We carved joy from pain,
found light in the shade,
and turned mourning into music
that the world still plays.

From cotton rows to crowded halls,
from chains to raised fists on walls,
we marched—
feet blistered, backs burdened,
hearts blazing like summer storms.

We are the echo of every whispered prayer
that asked for more than survival.
We are the answer to ancestors’ dreams—
not just alive, but vital.

Juneteenth is not just a date—
it’s a drumbeat in our bones,
a song of what was taken,
and how we made it home.

So we gather, we honor,
we grieve and we rise—
for every name unspoken,
for every stolen sky.

Because freedom is a fight
we keep on winning daily.
And justice is a seed
we water bravely.
