Polk County recently pushed back against AI data centers over concerns about infrastructure and long term impact, and rightfully so. But at the same time, our local government continues expanding AI powered Flock surveillance cameras across the county.

If AI is concerning enough to discourage data centers, why is AI surveillance suddenly acceptable?

What many people overlook is that systems like Flock depend on massive amounts of storage and processing power. Every scanned plate, image, timestamp, and vehicle record has to be stored somewhere. Large scale AI data storage is one of the exact reasons data centers are rapidly being built across the country right now.

Modern surveillance systems are no longer just cameras on poles. They are part of a growing AI infrastructure built around cloud storage, real time tracking, and data analysis.

So while communities say no to AI data centers, many of the technologies already being adopted are part of the exact reason those data centers are being built in the first place.

What do y’all think? Is it okay to be against AI Data centers but still cause the need for someone else to have to take on that burden?

Follow up to the Livingston / Texas AG story from earlier today.

Multiple East Texas news outlets ran stories saying Livingston was among more than 130 Texas cities “accused of illegally raising taxes” after a press release from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office.

The story spread pretty fast locally because Livingston was specifically named alongside other East Texas cities.

Not long after, the City of Livingston released an official public statement pushing back on the wording of the article. According to the city, Livingston has not imposed an ad valorem property tax since the late 1980s and they argued the reporting was misleading.

The city said the issue involved state audit and transparency compliance requirements tied to SB 1851, not that Livingston was actively or illegally raising property taxes. They also asked KTRE to retract or correct the story.

Since then, KTRE appears to have updated the wording of their article.

The newer wording now focuses on cities being prohibited from raising taxes above the “no new revenue” rate due to alleged compliance issues, instead of directly accusing cities like Livingston of illegally raising taxes.

So the situation now seems to be:

• The Attorney General’s office says certain cities failed compliance requirements tied to transparency/audit laws.

• Livingston says the original headlines made it sound like they were illegally taxing residents when they do not levy that type of property tax.

• KTRE updated the wording after the backlash and official responses.

We don’t usually make posts like this, but we wanted to say something real quick.

A lot of people don’t realize how much time goes into running this page every day. Between daily arrest reports, local stories, digging through records, writing posts and trying to keep people informed, this page takes a lot of work behind the scenes. Most of the time we’re doing it during breaks, late at night, or while juggling a dozen other things at once.

Lately we’ve noticed a lot of our posts being copied word for word and reposted as original content by other pages and people. We absolutely don’t mind information being shared. Honestly, that’s the whole point.

But if you’re going to copy and repost our work directly, we’d genuinely appreciate a little credit to Polk County Talks for the time and effort that went into putting it together.

That support really does help keep this page going every single day.

Well this got messy fast.

Earlier today, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton released a list of more than 130 Texas cities accused of violating state transparency and audit requirements tied to property tax laws. Livingston was included on that list.

Several news outlets ran headlines saying Livingston was “accused of illegally raising taxes.”

Now the City of Livingston has fired back publicly.

According to an official statement released by the city this afternoon, Livingston says they have not imposed an ad valorem property tax since the late 1980s and say the news story was misleading. The city claims the issue involved audit/transparency compliance requirements under SB 1851, not actually raising taxes illegally.

The city is now asking KTRE to retract or correct the story.

So at this point, the argument seems to be less about whether Livingston appeared on the Attorney General’s list… and more about what exactly that list means.

The Attorney General’s office says cities that fail certain audit and transparency requirements cannot raise taxes above the “no new revenue” rate.

Livingston says that doesn’t apply the way the headlines made it sound because the city doesn’t levy that type of property tax to begin with.

Either way, this one escalated quick.
