Do you struggle with discontentment?
In Philippians 4:12, Paul shares a secret to contentment. From the prison cell he was unjustly placed in, he writes, “I have learned the secret of being content.” The word learned stood out to me when I read it a few months ago. Sometimes, we are too hard on ourselves because we grumble, complain, or feel down. As followers of Christ, we know we should be content and grateful in all circumstances, but—let’s be honest—it’s tough! Maybe you’ve even wrestled with the lie that you’re not faithful enough or not a “good” enough believer to experience true, wholehearted gratitude. We need to quiet these judgmental thoughts and lay them at Jesus’ feet.
Paul practiced being content. He practiced finding things to be grateful for. The word learned suggests there were times he fell short and had to try again. He trained his mind and heart to look for God’s goodness in all things. He reminded himself of God’s promises. Most importantly, Paul stayed connected to the Source and leaned on Him.
We too will stumble as we work to quiet our hearts and remain grateful, no matter our circumstances. It takes practice to train our responses to reflect contentment, especially when our flesh wants to do the opposite. We must turn off our earthly expectations and comparisons in order to set our hearts up for gratitude. This might look like unfollowing or muting social media accounts that leave you feeling inadequate or unsatisfied. When feelings of discontentment arise, have a breath prayer ready to help calm your heart and keep your focus on Jesus. Make daily gratitude lists, serve others, and stay rooted in God’s Word and prayer. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself flourishing in contentment and bursting with gratitude.
As disciples of Christ, we will learn to rely on His power, and the blessings we receive through Him will make all the difference. One day, you will confidently say, “I have learned the secret of contentment.” It takes practice and grace, but we will get there!
This week, our focus will be on praising God and strengthening our gratitude muscles as we reflect on His goodness. When life feels hard, remember—you belong to a good, gracious, and loving God who is everything you need.
Breath prayer: Breathe in: Yet I will rejoice
Breathe out: In you, Lord.
(Habakkuk 3:17-19)
