This is why I’m glad I checked before driving it any farther.

The brake assembly is heavily rusted, the rotor looks rough, and the whole area clearly needs attention before I trust it on the road again.

Some repairs are annoying, but anything brake-related is not something I want to guess on. Safety comes first.

How does this happen after only 3 years and about 10k miles?

I’ll be honest, I have dropped the clutch a few times for some wheel spins, and I’ve also been practicing engine braking and driving the car a bit harder than usual.

My mechanic thinks the issue may come down to cheaper parts, but I’m still curious because the mileage seems pretty low for this kind of wear.

Does this look more like driving style, parts quality, or a mix of both?

This brake setup has definitely seen better days.

I took a closer look and found heavy rust, worn parts, and what looks like a brake assembly that really needs attention before the vehicle goes anywhere.

It’s one of those repairs that makes you glad you checked before trusting it on the road.

I’m planning to replace what needs replacing and have everything inspected properly before driving it.

My son brought these fish home from school after working on a project for about a month.

He had grown attached to them and didn’t want anything to happen to them, so now I’m trying to figure out how to care for them. I’m not sure what kind of fish they are or what size tank they need, and there’s also one smaller fish not pictured.

I’m on a tight budget, but I want to give them the safest setup I can.

What would be the most important first step?

I hired a mobile mechanic for brake and suspension work, and now I’m really concerned about how it was left.

The job included a wheel hub, caliper, rotor, brake line, and a few other parts. After looking closer, the brake line still appears to be rubbing, a sensor is hanging loose, and a tie rod bolt looks rounded off.

The biggest concern is that the brake pedal went straight to the floor when I tried to move the vehicle, and the brake light came on. I left it parked because I don’t feel safe driving it.

This was about $2,800 worth of work, and the mechanic said he would come back to bleed the brakes, but he hasn’t shown up yet.

Would you have another mechanic inspect it before doing anything else?

Found this while looking under the truck, and it definitely made me pause.

There’s a lot of rust, and one of the lines looks damaged enough that I don’t feel comfortable ignoring it. I’d rather catch it now than find out later that it turned into a bigger safety problem.

I’m planning to have it checked properly before driving it much more.

For anyone who has dealt with rusted lines before, what was the first thing you replaced?

Where do you guys go for therapy?
Because the 17-year-old I bought this from said the tire was “fine.”
Fine = cords showing.
Therapy = new rear tire + my credit card crying. 🙃

These guys quoted me $280 CAD for front brake pads and rotors.

I’m not sure if that’s a fair price or if I should be shopping around a little more. I know brake work matters, so I don’t want to cut corners, but I also don’t want to overpay if the quote is high.

For anyone who has had front brakes done recently, does that sound reasonable?

Utility Contractor Broke My Water Line
A utility contractor running fiber optics in the neighborhood broke my water line from the meter to the house. I asked the contractor not to bury until I could examine the repair the following day. There was a slow leak but even more concerning are the couplings they used to repair. They are Apollo Poly Stretch Couplings. Is this a satisfactory repair and, if not, what would you use? Why not a just a double ended barbed fitting? Is it unreasonable to require the contractor to hire a licensed plumber? they spent all day Friday according to my wife and would have buried had I not asked.

Advice needed from the deck people.

I’m building this deck myself and I’d say I’m fairly capable, but I noticed an issue right as I was about to start picture framing the stair treads.

I have 9 stair stringers spaced 12” on center. They are level with each other, but they’re off level compared to the main deck by enough that I think it will be noticeable. The heel side of the tread will sit higher and the toe side lower.

Everything is already secured, so now I’m trying to figure out the best way to correct it without making a bigger mess.

The bottom of the stringers is attached to a 2x10 that’s anchored to a trench footing with Tapcons.

Would you remove and notch the bottom of the stringers to key into the 2x10 base plate, shim the top of the stringers, or handle it another way?

I appreciate any productive advice before I go too far with the treads.
