After 10 hours of polishing and measuring they are done. If surface finish matters on a crank journal, a cam journal, a piston skirt, and cylinder wall, why wouldn’t it matter where the oil wedge actually lives? Maybe polishing bearings isn’t for everybody… but neither is building engines that actually win.

Just got back from the dealership for a simple oil change and somehow it turned into a full-blown legal proceeding. The advisor walked out with pictures of my timing belt claiming it “needs to be replaced immediately” because it has tiny cracks in it. Since when is a timing belt not supposed to have grooves and lines on it? It’s literally made of rubber. If they were so concerned about cracks they’d be replacing every tire in the parking lot too.
Then they handed me paperwork and wanted me to SIGN IT saying I declined the repair. Why am I signing legal documents because I don’t want to buy a timing belt? If the belt breaks that’s between me and the belt. Last time I checked I own the vehicle, not the dealership.
Seems like every oil change now comes with a surprise emergency repair that absolutely cannot wait another day. Funny how my car drove perfectly into the service drive but suddenly it’s one missed paycheck away from catastrophic failure. Am I the only one that thinks this inspection process has gotten completely out of hand?

To this lower ball joint specifically congratulations because you’ve officially become the strongest structural connection ever engineered by mankind.
I bent the pickle fork.
The hammer is tired.
The control arm looks emotionally exhausted.
And this thing STILL refuses to separate from the knuckle.
Meanwhile every mechanic online says:
“it should pop right out.”
POP WHERE?
INTO ANOTHER DIMENSION?
At this point the rust has fused everything together so aggressively I’m pretty sure archaeologists could excavate this suspension 400 years from now and still not get it apart.
I swear old Ford suspension components are held together by corrosion and unresolved anger alone.
Absolutely exhausting.

I’ve dealt with stubborn bolts, rusty fittings, and questionable backyard repairs, but this little clamp is somehow the thing testing my patience today.
There has to be a trick to removing it without mangling everything around it. I’m not trying to turn a hose clamp into a two-hour project with broken parts and regret.
How do you guys remove these things cleanly?

To whoever manufactured this pipe cutter and then apparently vanished from recorded history — congratulations, you’ve officially ruined my afternoon.
I figured identifying an old pipe cutter would take maybe 30 seconds. WRONG.
Instead I’m zooming into blurry stampings trying to decode whether this says:
“Made in U.S.A.”
“Made by aliens”
or “good luck idiot.”
The thing looks like it survived three world wars and still cuts better than half the new tools at the hardware store today.
Meanwhile Google keeps showing me modern tubing cutters made from recycled soda cans instead of anything remotely useful.
Someone out there absolutely knows this brand and is choosing to remain silent for entertainment purposes.

To whoever previously installed this caliper bolt with the strength of a thousand suns I hope you know your actions have consequences.
I attempted what should have been a routine repair and instead discovered this bolt was apparently fused together at the molecular level.
Now the head has snapped off, the caliper bracket is trapped in mechanical purgatory, and I’m researching extraction techniques that sound suspiciously similar to surgical procedures.
This is no longer “car maintenance.”
This is an active conflict between man and oxidized steel.
Someone will be paying for my emotional damages.

To whoever made this old pipe cutter and added the mystery spike… I would like a word.
I picked this up thinking, “Cool, old pipe cutter.” Then I noticed the little pointed blade thing and immediately realized I only understand about 70% of what I’m holding.
The cutter wheel makes sense. The rollers make sense. The handle makes sense. But that spike looks like it was added for a reason, and I don’t want to use it wrong and look like the guy who lost a fight to plumbing equipment.
Let me be clear: I’m not above asking before I start guessing.
Is that spike for cleaning up the inside of the pipe after cutting, removing burrs, or something else entirely?
Old-school tool people, what am I looking at here?
