𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝙈𝙖𝙙𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙩 (𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵)?

In light of the Mother's Day debate with fur moms, I've seen comments calling for inclusivity and accusing mothers of being 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘵 (selfish) for not wanting to share the day. Before you scroll past, here's a fun fact worth knowing.

𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 was founded by 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀 in 1908 to specifically honor mothers, inspired by her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, a social activist who cared for wounded soldiers during the Civil War and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.

Here's the most ironic part. Anna herself never married and never had children. Yet she dedicated her entire life fighting for this day to have a specific and intentional meaning, all inspired by the sacrifices of her own mother.

She even spent her later years fighting AGAINST the commercialization of Mother's Day because it was straying too far from its original purpose, to honor the sacrifice and love of mothers.

So if the very founder of Mother's Day was this protective of its meaning, I think it's fair to say we should respect that.

And to the fur moms and fur parents calling for inclusivity, I hear you. But instead of reshaping a day that was built on a very specific kind of sacrifice, why not fight for your own day? Anna Jarvis did it. So can you. 🐾

This morning, while I was in the bathroom rinsing with mouthwash and blowing my nose, Kai walked in right after waking up.

𝗠𝗲: 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘓𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘪. (hugging him)
𝗛𝗶𝗺: 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘔𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘺
𝗠𝗲: 𝘔𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘬
(I say it this way because whenever he has colds, he calls it “my nose is sick”)

Then out of nowhere, he said:
𝗛𝗶𝗺: 𝘔𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘺, 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩?
𝗠𝗲: 𝘏𝘶𝘩? 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳… 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥?
𝗛𝗶𝗺: 𝘕𝘰! 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘺!
(He stretched both hands out, showing me how it pulls.)
And then it clicked.
𝗠𝗲: 𝘖𝘩𝘩𝘩… 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘬?
𝗛𝗶𝗺: 𝘠𝘦𝘴! 😄

I just stood there laughing, amazed.
The only time we ever wore masks on a train was back in 2021 during COVID. It was the boys’ very first train ride.

Kai was only 𝟭 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟵 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 then.

So I asked him:
𝗠𝗲: 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘔𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘬?
𝗛𝗶𝗺: (pointing to my mouth) 𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 🤯

Kids really do hold on to the smallest, most random moments.

Meanwhile, I can’t even remember what I ate yesterday 😅

The other day, Kai (6) was proudly showing me his schoolwork (see photo 🥹). While we were talking, I randomly asked him about skin color. It’s not something that comes up much at home, except when we’re coloring people in pictures.

𝗠𝗲: 𝘒𝘢𝘪, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯?
𝗛𝗶𝗺: (looks at his arm) 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵… 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯. 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯.
𝗠𝗲: 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘔𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘺?
𝗛𝗶𝗺: 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯 😂
