Yesterday, our new Plant Program Lead Technician Schylar Gholson was on his way to Parson's Landing where he's working on habitat restoration when he captured this image of a Catalina Island fox in a toyon bush near Emerald Bay. "We were driving to Parson's Beach to meet our UC Irvine volunteers who were helping us with fennel removal. We spotted him when we were driving by Emerald Bay and when I got out to take a picture of him he crawled up into that toyon and was checking me out." A little known fact: the Catalina Island has retractable claws (like a cat!) which are good for climbing. The Catalina island fox nearly went extinct in the late 1990s from disease. The Catalina Island Conservancy estimates there are now over 1,700 of the diminutive species on the island. They are found nowhere else in the world.
