It felt great meeting photography/film/design undergrads at Ithaca College for portfolio reviews and sharing my experience while attempting to impart some meaningful feedback. I never thought I’d be telling young photographers to incorporate their phones for legit content but I also challenged them to try shooting with my Lieca M10 (which none of them were familiar with BTW) Hopefully I could give a little insight and inspiration.........🙏 📷🎬🌟

Shih, 'Ni Hao Ma - Mexico' 2011.
LIC resident since 2009 Shih Lee opened Shi Restaurant in 2008 and quickly moved into the Mexican concept genre with Skinny’s Cantina in 2011 on Center Blvd. This satirical portrait was part of a project on local restaurateurs and the food they create.

In the studio timelapse documenting the slow process of working with a view camera: testing, troubleshooting the film back when it jams, refocusing etc. I wanted the final image to capture Milton in raw form acknowledging the struggle he’s faced in writing a book about his life experience as a Korean orphan and an African American growing up far from his homeland. (See previous post)

Milton, the stage, 2019
An old friend (and racquetball nemesis) Milton Washington has a story to share. He grew up on the streets of Korea, his mother was a prostitute, and at the age of 8 was adopted from an orphanage by an American family... His memoir “Slickyboy” is currently being shopped I look forward to reading the published version soon. Photographed last week on one of my remaining sheets of #type55 Polaroid film.

Tony, home studio portrait, 2008.
I had befriended Tony Vaccaro as my neighbor a few years before he came over for this portrait. Back then he was taking care of his sister, his youngest son still lived with him, and their railroad apartment was surrounded by boxes and books and negatives. There was no HBO documentary or Monroe Gallery representation and we were both (in a sense) wayward photographers (50 years apart) except his journey was truly exceptional. Between us was an understanding of some experience we could appreciate of one another despite such different paths. Today he is busy at 96 yrs old living the life of a legend receiving the attention he deserves. Back then he carried himself as if it had already happened.
We shot on 4x5 #kodak color negative film. This image is available @plaxallgallery (16x20 giclée print) as part of my series of locals on display through March 3rd.

Working repose shooting some images for Zenzar Cure from the Heart collection of healing symbols. This collaboration means something to me all models are living with acute or chronic illnesses and conditions. A quote from founder and therapist Barbara Thompson, “There is a healing essence that exists in the energy stream of all that is fueled by love and if one can tap into it, this is the place of Miracles.”
