That other dimension is rarely visible. Finding a way to translate that into visual language has been an essential commitment in my work as an artist. What the Light Saw is a tribute to the restless shifting of light and energy. The other dimensions, other understanding present in this work are strengthened through the accompanying poetry, and the imagination it calls us to. The work embodies that aspect which carries us to the delineation, and unification between matter and spirit.

This solo exhibition runs until February 7, 2021. Visiting hours are Fridays, 6-9pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 12-5pm.

Virtual walkthrough link available.

Is it in language that our imaginative inspiration rests?
Or is it in the split seconds, the nano-seconds of brain processing wherein language has its root in experience? This character, Chinese, translated as thought/intention suggests consciousness and existence are a single tissue. We are that: with words stripped to their nakedness, their essence.
Thanks to the gifts of friends, and the ever refreshing roil of change, we eventually wake up.
May your year ahead be bright with just enough change to bring into your heart the happiness of breath, the aliveness of the air we share.

Trees are some of the most challenging things to work with: their natural energy is completely present to our eyes. Organizing that with a visual language creates something that includes more than just leaves, branches, or the massed form that a copse of trees conveys. These watercolors hover between the information my eyes see, and the less-than-visible things my being sense.

Marbleized stoneware piece by Takiguchi Kazuo, Untitled from 2016. Swipe.
Both of these images evoke a mixing and intermingling, a new pattern-making. Kazuo’s inhabits a vessel that might hold many thing. Perhaps a new vision forward for our country. The second image is material sitting on top of water, also making beautiful, shifting patterns. This is not so abstract if we can each configure our way forward in support of the new pattern-making potential of intermingling our beliefs, ideas, and determinations with those of others.
