Think you know the geographic center of the United States?

Well, it actually changed. For nearly 100 years, that title belonged to Lebanon, Kansas. But when Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, the true geographic center of all 50 states shifted here to Belle Fourche, South Dakota. With the actual survey marker about 20 miles north on private land.

This charming Western town sits outside the Black Hills and proudly marks the spot with a granite monument and Visitor Center with museum celebrating it's unique place in American history.

So if you're road tripping through South Dakota, on your way to Mount Rushmore, or Badlands National Park, make a quick stop in Belle Fourche. The monument is open 24/7 so it doesn't matter what time of day you pass through.
