NO EPISODE TOMORROW! Due to travel to attend the Waco Independent Film Festival this week will be dark for our “We’re Making a Movie” podcast. If you have’t given last week’s episode a listen, DO! It was awesome. Equal parts inspiring and terrifying but all about raising funds for your feature film. We’ll be back live on Youtube next week, Wednesday morning at 10am PT and that episode will launch everywhere you get your podcast in the following days.

Filmmaker Friends attending the Waco Independent Film Festival, let’s party! We LOVE this festival. Run by two of the most genuine and generous men in the film festival game, we always look forward to attending and maaaaaybe even make shorts just so we can submit to them. So excited to be back again this year, here’s just a glut of photos from past years (previously known as Deep in the Heart Film Festival… we knew them when🤣)

Another amazing interview ahead! We’re talking to Ryan McDonough about how he funded his proof of concept short and then feature film, “Last Night in Rozzie.” How did you secure your funding? What were the struggles? HOW THE HECK DID YOU GET JEREMY SISTO!?!?!?! (Be still, our “Clueless” obsessed hearts.)

We’ve got some awesome film fest news!
Our short film “In the Event Of” has officially been accepted into the Gig Harbor Film Festival!

We’re so excited to be a part of this lineup, we truly love this festival more than we can say. Big thanks to for having us—we can’t wait to bring the Sneaky Pineapple chaos back to the Pacific Northwest.

See you in September, Washington!

Getting funding for your indie feature film…. the monumental task continues. While we all dream of a phone call from the big studios, you’ll probably have to find investors elsewhere. And sometimes magic strikes. We’re sitting down with Writer / Producer Hudson Phillips, who has two features under his belt. We will discuss how he obtained the money, managed those funds, and what he learned from his two projects that we can put to our own uses.

Hudson Phillips is a writer, producer, and founder of Mirror Box Films. He grew up in small-town South Georgia (thick accent and all) until his father relocated the family to Haiti to work as a pharmacist in remote mountain communities. After his dad unexpectedly passed away, Hudson returned to Atlanta (thankfully losing the accent) and fell in love with genre storytelling as a way to process his grief.

His first feature, the post-apocalyptic This World Alone, was released on Hulu, won Best Feature at six festivals and Best Screenplay at two, and earned a positive review in The New York Times. His second, the sci-fi romance Guacamole Yesterdays, is now available on major platforms following a nationwide 13-city theatrical tour and an award-winning 11-stop festival run.

Hudson has worked as a writer-for-hire and had an original spec optioned by Lions Gate Films. He’s also the author of Writing Unforgettable Characters and has taught screenwriting and indie film production at workshops and college campuses.

A former single dad to a now college-bound son, Hudson lives outside Atlanta with his wife, two rescue hounds, and a sh*t-ton of books.

Dances with Films is in the books! Natalie and the team of “Obit” rocked the Orange carpet, slayed the Q&A and then really got serious with an impromptu karaoke session at the Power House. This gem of a short film is still hit the festivals so definitely catch it if you can.

Atlanta ShortsFest 2025
Anyone making short films out there, you gotta check out this festival. Well curated, fantastic filmmaker turnout and the whole festival team could not be more kind and filmmaker friendly. Tara (that me!) got to tag along with a film she starred in called “Death is a Favor,” and had the most amazing time. Thank you and for an amazing weekend!

Link in our bio! Is crowdfunding for your indie feature film giving you minor heart palpitations? We get it! We’ve done a few ourselves, and we still think raising funds via Kickstarter sounds daunting. So we’re bringing in a pro to walk us through all the ins and outs of the successful campaigns she’s been a part of over the years. We are pleased to introduce you to Paul Rhodes. Actor, Director, Producer, Paula is the ultimate go-getter. You may have seen her in any number of commercials or heard her voice in some of your favorite video games and cartoons. What we are really jazzed about is her feature film, “Delicate State”, that was made possible in part by crowdfunding. And seriously, Paula just gives great advice when it comes to this stuff. We’re thrilled to get to pick her brain.

You Are the Resistance Circa 2008
Sometimes Google Photos gets it right. This is probably a favorite photo from over the years. Thanks digging this one up Google.
