🚨 TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

“Sit with your back to the wall.”

In restaurants, cafés, and hotel lobbies, consider choosing a seat where you can see the entrance and have a clear view of your surroundings.

This isn’t about paranoia. It’s about situational awareness.

Knowing who is entering, what is happening around you, and where your exits are can give you more time to respond if something unexpected happens.

After 20 years of field work, it’s a simple habit I maintain wherever I go.

Stay aware. Stay prepared.

TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

“A life vest with no straps does not save you.”

Not every life vest is ready to protect you.

I have been on river tours where life vests were handed out as a formality, even though the straps were missing or not functioning properly. In calm water, the vest may float as designed. In an emergency, however, a poorly secured vest can ride up and fail to stay properly positioned.

Before getting on the boat, check your life vest:

Make sure all straps are present and functioning.
Adjust the vest for a secure fit.
Check that the buckles fasten properly.
Do not assume the equipment has been recently inspected.

A life vest only works when it fits and is properly secured. Check it before you need it.

SECURITY OBSERVATIONS

“Social media can be a powerful advance reconnaissance tool.”

Your LinkedIn may reveal where you work.
Your Instagram may reveal where you eat or spend time.
Your Facebook may reveal when you travel.

Individually, these details may seem harmless. Combined, they can help someone with malicious intent build a detailed picture of your routines, locations, and movements—before you even arrive.

Before any high-risk deployment or international travel, take a few minutes to:

🔐 Review what information is publicly visible.
📍 Remove unnecessary location and routine information.
🗓️ Avoid posting travel plans in real time.
👥 Review who can see your posts and personal details.
🔎 Search your own name and public profiles to see what information is easily discoverable.

Your digital footprint can reveal more than you realize. Audit it before you deploy.

TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

“Never tell the front desk your room number out loud.”

Your hotel check-in may seem routine, but avoid sharing your room number where others can hear it.

If a hotel employee announces your room number aloud, ask them to write it down instead. You don’t know who may be standing nearby or listening.

A room number can be enough information for someone to identify where you are staying and potentially follow you to your room.

For added privacy:

🔑 Keep your room number confidential.
🗣️ Ask staff to avoid saying it aloud.
👀 Be aware of who is around you during check-in.
🚪 If someone follows you toward your room, return to the lobby or another staffed area.

Your hotel room should be your private space. Protect the information that leads to it.

TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

“Book floors 3 through 6. Not higher.”

Hotel room selection can affect your emergency options.

Lower floors may provide easier access from the street, while higher floors can be more difficult to evacuate during a fire or other emergency. However, there is no universal “safe” floor range—building height, fire protection systems, stairwell access, local emergency response, and the capabilities of local fire services all matter.

When choosing a hotel, consider:

🏨 The building’s fire safety systems
🚪 The location and accessibility of emergency stairwells
🔥 Fire alarms, sprinklers, and evacuation procedures
📍 Your distance from a safe exit
🚒 Local emergency response capabilities

Don’t choose a hotel room based on floor number alone. Know your exits before you need them.

🚨 TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

“A clean office does not mean safe equipment.”

The tour operator’s office is spotless.
The staff is friendly.
The brochure is professional.

None of that tells you anything about the condition of the ropes, the boat hull, the vehicle brakes, or when the equipment was last inspected.

Before you book an adventure activity, look beyond the presentation. Ask about equipment inspections, maintenance, safety procedures, and emergency plans.

A professional operation should be able to answer straightforward safety questions.

Don’t judge safety by appearances. Verify it.

🔐 TRAVEL SAFETY TIP

"Use a VPN on every public Wi-Fi connection."

Airport. Hotel. Café. Public Wi-Fi can expose your connection to unnecessary security risks.

Before connecting to public Wi-Fi:
📱 Use a trusted VPN when appropriate.
🔒 Make sure your device and apps are updated.
🚫 Avoid accessing sensitive accounts on unsecured networks when possible.
⚙️ Turn off automatic Wi-Fi connections.

A VPN can add an important layer of protection by encrypting network traffic, but it is not a complete security solution. Use it alongside strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and good device security practices.

Public Wi-Fi is convenient. Your security should still come first.

🔐 TRAVEL SAFETY TIP

"Your fingerprints may be in your last ten Instagram posts."

Something as simple as a photo can reveal more information than you realize. High-resolution images of peace signs, close-up hand shots, watches, jewelry, or manicures can potentially expose detailed fingerprint patterns.

When traveling in a high-risk environment, think about what your photos reveal—not just where you are, but information about you and your devices.

For added security:
📱 Consider using a strong passcode instead of biometric unlocking when appropriate.
📸 Avoid posting high-resolution close-ups of your fingertips.
🌍 Be mindful of what personal information your photos reveal.
🔒 Review your device's security settings before traveling.

Your digital security starts with what you choose to share.

🌍 TRAVEL SAFETY TIP

"The most dangerous moment of your trip is not where you think."

It may not be the destination itself—it can be the moment you arrive.

After a long flight, you're tired, distracted, unfamiliar with your surroundings, and often carrying everything you need for the trip. Fatigue and unfamiliarity can affect your judgment and awareness.

Before heading out:
✈️ Give yourself time to rest after a long journey.
📍 Know where you're going before leaving the airport or hotel.
📱 Keep important contact information easily accessible.
🚗 Use reliable transportation.
👀 Stay aware of your surroundings.

Don't let exhaustion turn arrival into your biggest vulnerability.
