A great reminder to all my fellow business owners out there feeling a little high on the horse:⁣

I may be biased because I grew up in a family biz but that doesn’t change the fact that small businesses are the backbone of our communities.

Hospitality is more than an industry. It’s a philosophy. ⁣

It’s how you treat human beings and make them feel seen, heard and valued whether they’re your customer, employee, vendor or community member. ⁣

We need more humanity in business. Pass it on…

After a lifetime in the restaurant business, one thing I’ve learned is that people want to feel seen, heard, and appreciated.

So why wouldn’t every businesses think like a restaurant owner?

02/26/2025

Don't overthink it...🤔

We're all just human beings.

I don’t think It matters if you’re a drummer trying to get more gigs or a restaurant trying to get more customers - creating a sense of community and connection (however you want to do that) will lead to more relationships and more opportunities.

Every business is in the hospitality business (even if they don't realize it)

Working in my family's restaurant business taught me that people remember how you make them feel more than anything else. As I transitioned into other industries, I realized this isn't just for restaurants and hotels to think about.

Own a plumbing company? How does the receptionist greet the customer when they answer the phone?

Own a retail store? Do your employees notice when a pregnant customer comes in and offer them water or a place to sit?

Did your client reference a restaurant they love so you send them lunch as a surprise and delight?

It's these little details that change your business from a transaction business to a relationship business.

Customers are humans - and they and they wanted to be treated like humans. The moment you approach business with a hospitality mindset, every interaction with your customers turns into an opportunity to stand out from your competition.

Yesterday, I randomly ran into a business hero of mine, the real estate legend himself (and hopefully the next Mayor of Los Angeles), Rick Caruso as I was leaving the gym. Rick owns the Palisades Village in the heart of Pacific Palisades, and some other amazing properties around LA including The Grove, The Americana at Brand and others. He’s also been a civic leader in LA for more than 40 years and is someone I admire in both business and humanitarianism. ⁣
⁣ ⁣
He took the time to chat with me for a few minutes about the Palisades fire, the long road ahead and what he and his family are doing to stay safe.

He also gave me a simple piece of advice when I asked him about my real estate investing goals: “Just get out there and do it. It’s that simple. Get out over your skis a little bit and do it. Don’t be foolish about it, but get out there and do it.” ⁣

I think we all need to take that advice rather than overcomplicating things. ⁣

A good reminder, for sure.

Together with Karin and my good friend Cam, we have been raising money that we've been using to purchase supplies for wildfire victims and the first responders.

We're headed back out tomorrow for more supplies and also working to coordinate with local restaurants to see what is needed in terms of food and volunteers. In 48 hours we’ve raised $13,000 - but we need more.

Our community has been completely decimated, and many of our friends and neighbors have lost their homes and everything they own.

If you'd like to contribute ANY amount of money to our efforts, please Venmo me -Ruffini (https://venmo.com/u/Nick-Ruffini)
--> 100% of the funds are going directly to aid that we are purchasing ourselves.

I'm excited to announce the launch of Ruffini Capital, a private equity fund focused on retail real estate investing.

I spent 20+ years running restaurants and a shopping center with my family and have spent the last 15+ years running my own businesses in music, media and entertainment. But I've always had a calling to get back into real estate, specifically investing in strip malls like the one we used to own. And now I’m finally taking the plunge (while continuing to run my other businesses)

It's not lost on me that I'm entering an extremely tough market and even on it's easiest days, is beyond hard. I'm confident in my knowledge in the space, my willingness to study my ass off, enough self awareness to admit what I don't know and I'm ok with looking stupid from time to time.

I'm heeding the advice from some trusted mentors, including my father, to be diligent in my approach, open and honest with my potential investors and pragmatic with my decision making.

I'll be sharing updates along the way, but for now, thanks for reading and if investing in retail real estate is something you're interested in, I'd love to chat.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen with people who run family businesses is that everyone is involved with everything. This can’t be the way.

The best thing you can do, and arguably the hardest (speaking from experience) is to divvy up departments among family members. Let each person run the department they are most suited to run, and let them run it the way they see fit.

Have a family meeting every couple of days to check in with everyone to see how their departments are going and make sure they’re laddering up to the overall goals of the business.

If you can do this, you’ll be light years ahead of most family businesses.
