The attendant at the Shell off 71 looked me up and down like I'd shown up to the wrong audition.
"No offense, sweetheart," he said — and truly, they never hear themselves — "but if something happened to my daughter on the closing shift, I don't know that I'd want you showing up."
I poured my coffee. Took my time with the lid.
"Sir, I've pulled people out of flipped cars on this highway, talked a man off a bridge, and been first through the door more times than I can count." I set exact change on the counter. "Your daughter would be fine."
He opened his mouth. I was already at the door.
"Hope she stays safe. Night."
Back on 71, coffee in the cupholder, I almost laughed.
Some people need a whole presentation. I've learned to keep it brief.
