The Long Road Back: What Visa Denial, 14 Countries, and 1,200 Days in Transit Taught Me
Since my travels to LA and New York, I’ve been meeting so many inspiring, interesting people — it feels like a new chapter, and I’d love to reconnect with everyone. I spent years outside the U.S. waiting for the chance to come back, and it finally happened this September. So here’s a quick recap of how I got here.
Back in 2021, my visa expired. As an immigrant from Russia, I had to leave the U.S., unsure if I’d ever be able to return. But there was a glimpse of hope — I had started working with 411 Music Group, who would later sponsor my talent visa., plus my previous jobs and connections played a huge part in keeping that hope alive. I had been working in the industry for years, and I’m endlessly grateful for the people who believed in me and stood by me through the chaos of immigration paperwork, uncertainty, and waiting.
To say it was a long, tense process is an understatement. The O-1 visa journey feels like betting your entire life on red — you prepare for years, but the outcome depends on forces completely outside your control. My first petition was denied. It was crushing — it made me question my worth, my choices, and whether all those years meant anything at all.
But it also taught me something I’ll never forget: adaptation is everything. You can’t control what happens, only how you act and react. Putting your big ambitions aside to listen and observe isn’t weakness. For years, I treated my dedication to my U.S. career as noble perseverance — but in reality, it was often just survival mode. I wish I had embraced the change more, lived with joy instead of anxiety.
I also want to take a moment to thank the people who made it possible for me to come back 💜 , for believing in me for the past five years and counting; and the entire team, ❤️ .licky 🫶 , Andy Saiker, for backing me up through the visa process; and all the partners, artists & creatives I’ve had the privilege to work with. I wouldn’t be here without you!
