Khadijah VanBrakle is a Black Muslim woman and contemporary young adult author living in the Southwestern United States.

Born and raised in Canada to American parents, she writes stories that reflect the dual marginalization of Black American Muslim teens, because for far too long, those voices have been missing from the shelves.

Her 2023 debut novel, Fatima Tate Takes The Cake, and her upcoming release, My Perfect Family (out August 26, 2025), center young Muslim girls navigating adolescence while holding space for identity, faith, and family. Her work is published by Holiday House. Learn more at khadijahvanbrakle.com or follow her on Instagram.

🙄 Some people learned by observing, some by listening, and others by doing it the hard way.

This is the hard way and unfortunately the children are experiencing it too. All he had to do was ask somebody.

Nick Cannon has openly reflected on the consequences of fathering multiple children with different women, admitting that his choices have contributed to creating several broken homes. While he’s expressed love and financial support for all of his children, Nick has acknowledged the emotional complexity and challenges that come with being spread so thin. He shared that, despite his good intentions, he recognizes that not being able to be present for every child in the way they deserve can lead to hurt and instability. His honesty reveals a deeper awareness of the impact his lifestyle has on the mothers of his children and the kids themselves, admitting that it’s not the ideal family structure he once envisioned.
