Hyperpartisan political polarization is exhausting and destructive. It's a dumb way to govern any nation, and yet in every democracy the divisions are growing deeper and the opposition more entrenched.
If you are bored by these political dynamics and yearn for an alternative, then you might enjoy listening to The Futurists interview with Colin Megill, the inventor of Pol.is.
Pol.is is a mechanism for finding consensus on contentious issues. It works. It has been deployed in Asia and Europe to help find common ground amid fractious political debate. Pol.is is open source, which means anyone is free to download it and implement it.
Pol.is also low friction, which means that individual people can participate a lot or a little, as much as they like. That is very different from the kind polling that most political organizations use today. Most telephone polls take 45 minutes and are incredibly tedious, and some of them are push-polls, which means they are deviously designed to promote a particular outcome. Pol.is is designed as an alternative to telephone polling.
At the Futurists, we are interested in decentralized governance and the use of computer power to enhance democracy. If you are, too, then you might like to give this podcast a listen.
We had a great time talking to Colin. He's smart.
