Before taking to a life onscreen, Taylor went through many occupations, including mining, lifeguarding, bouncing, and working on an oil rig-during which period he narrowly averted death during a shipwreck in the Indian Ocean. At the age of 24, Taylor enrolled in the Western Australia Academy of Dramatic Arts, committing himself to an acting career from there on out. He made his screen debut shortly afterward with an appearance on an episode of the drama series "The Flying Doctors" (Nine Network 1986-1993), and landed his first regular television role just one year later.
Taylor joined the Australian soap opera "Home and Away" (Seven Network 1988-) for a 20-episode stint, playing the scheming romancer Nicholas Walsh. Additional recurring roles followed, including a starring position in the crime drama miniseries "The Feds" (Nine Network 1993-96) as Superintendant Dave Griffin. Taylor soon found success on the big screen, appearing in major films like "The Matrix" (1999), "Vertical Limit" (2001), and "Ned Kelly" (2003). After batting around a handful of smaller parts on film and television, Taylor returned to center stage as the star of the crime drama series "Longmire" (A&E 2012-), playing the titular Wyoming sheriff who returns to law enforcement following the death of his wife.

Woods’ career gained major traction in the 1980s, a decade that showcased his intensity and range—qualities that would define his work going forward. After rising to prominence in The Onion Field (1979), he quickly became known for complex, fast-talking characters who often walked the line between charm and volatility.
In 1983, Woods starred in David Cronenberg’s Videodrome, a sci-fi psychological thriller that earned cult status and demonstrated Woods’ ability to ground surreal material with unnerving realism. A year later, he played Max Bercovicz in Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America, opposite Robert De Niro—a performance he considers one of his personal favorites. That same year, he starred in Against All Odds, continuing a run of varied, high-profile roles.
He earned his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of journalist Richard Boyle in Oliver Stone’s Salvador (1986), and just a year later, won his first Primetime Emmy for the TV film Promise. He added a second Emmy for My Name Is Bill W. (1989), solidifying his reputation as a force in both film and television.
By the end of the ‘80s, Woods had carved out a unique place in Hollywood—respected for his intensity, intelligence, and willingness to take risks with difficult characters. These qualities led to acclaimed roles in the '90s and beyond, from Casino and Nixon to Ghosts of Mississippi (earning him a second Oscar nomination) and Contact. His work as the voice of Hades in Disney’s Hercules (1997) introduced him to a new generation, and he continued working across genres, including in the legal drama Shark and the animated series Justice League Action.
Woods has maintained a presence in film, TV, and voice work across decades, with a career shaped in no small part by the risks and recognition he earned in the 1980s.

At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, she became the first American woman to win two Olympic all-around and vault titles, the first woman of any nation to do so since Věra Čáslavská in 1964 and 1968, and the second woman ever to have won 2 Olympic all-around and at least 2 World all-around titles. She also won silver on floor and gold as part of the United States team, who were nicknamed ""Golden Girls"".

Biles has since secured an additional five World medals, for a total of 30. She holds the record for World all-around titles , and is the sixth woman to win an individual all-around title at both the World Championships and the Olympics, the first since Lilia Podkopayeva in 1996 to hold both titles simultaneously. Biles is the tenth female gymnast and first American female gymnast to win a World medal on every event, and the first female gymnast since Daniela Silivaș in 1988 to win a medal on every event at a single Olympic Games or World Championships.
In 2022, President Joe Biden awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2023, she won her eighth U.S. Gymnastics title, breaking the 90-year-old U.S. Gymnastics title record previously held by Alfred Jochim.
