Al-Talib Newsmagazine

Al-Talib Newsmagazine Al-Talib (http://www.al-talib.org) is UCLA's student-run Muslim newsmagazine.

About Us:

Al-Talib Newsmagazine was established in 1990 by Muslim UCLA students, making it the first student-run Muslim publication in America. We operate under UCLA Student Media, with our entire staff made up of dedicated students. At the height of print media, Al-Talib printed 40,000 issues four times a year and distributed en masse to over 40 states covering most major cities. However, recent

shifts in technology and journalism leads the newsmagazine to move toward online-based publishing, with an aspiration to create a constant and relevant web presence. Our Mission:

Al-Talib provides an independent perspective on issues important to Muslim communities. Targeting a college-age audience, we seek to create an outlet for activism on and off campus, a platform for representation of all facets of the Muslim-American communities and a safe space for sensitive topics. We believe that this sort of dialogue, no matter how uncomfortable it may be at times, is necessary in order for our community to appreciate and celebrate its diversity.

“In no regard does excessive drug use warrant Officer Chauvin’s brutal treatment of George Floyd on May 25, 2020.

In no context should a human being face aggravated asphyxia and eventual death due to an officer’s show of force.

In no case should an official hired to ‘protect and serve’ the community ever need to kneel on a person already in custody, much less for 9 minutes and 29 seconds and for counterfeit charges.

Our latest article explores the further implications that the trial could hold and outlines the unfortunate reality that if accountability is never held from the start, people of color will continue to face systemic barriers towards civil liberty and freedom.
