The New Normal
It's true. COVID-19 is impactful. I hope that the economic disruption is short, but I cannot forecast the future.
Let's avoid this virus from hurting generations from now. I've asked my staff to bear with me, to understand I will not abandon them, that we will continue on as a family. They are welcomed to stay, but I understand if they don't.
If have to morph into something else other than AOR for small businesses, we will transform into a useful group of creatives -- different, unique and still striving to be the best. That's our spirit.
A Business Reality
A business cannot exist without customers. Customers want their needs fulfilled.
If a customer knows what a business offers, it gives rise to brand recognition and reliance.
None of it is by accident. It’s happens because of advertising.
Our goal as an agency is to position businesses clients to standout from similar competitors.
We won't lie, it isn't hard. It just takes a full application of our creative abilities and be the best agency there is.
Advertising requires creativity, patience, communication and dedication- just like a relationship.
Devote your mind and heart to advertising for your clients and the results will be immeasurable.
Whoever is happy will make others happy too.

“Winning doesn’t always mean being first. Winning means you’re doing better than you’ve done before.”
Defining Your Brand
Building a brand means figuring out who you are and what your company or products offers. You have competitors that offer the same thing and may have their shops and brochures in similar motif. That’s sure formula for swimming against the tide.
Brand development requires that you remain patient, deliberate and carefully plot out who your customers are and how to reach them.
Don’t worry about your competitors. They are busy playing the short game – making as much as they can, as fast they can without regard to market shifts and product desirability.
You are running a marathon. Preserving your sprinters speed to move on what ever advances emerge for your brand. You must use the time to gauge what people want, how to deliver it, and how to let customers understand the benefits that you offer.
Because you refuse to panic, know that companies ahead of you get sloppy, arrogant and refuse to conform to change. You, on the other hand have taken the time to prepare to win the race because you know how to. That is the start of growing your brand.
"There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them."
-- Denis Waitley

We Shall Rise
“From the ashes, Phoenix shall rise. It will consume its enemies with hellfire.”
We created CDM Digital Advertising from a traditional agency. It wasn’t that our predecessor was bad. Far from it. It was disjointed and inconsistent. The creative work was decent and positioned the team to win a couple of awards.
Erraticism yanked the rug from under the agency and it became irrelevant.
On reflection, a lack of loyalty, and immaturity permeating the staff made it joyless. But we had a solution – dismantle the shop and remake it. Our foundation was rebuilt on a partnership of unity and connection.
We re-branded and became imitative of Phoenix. We created a heap of ashes and creative debris and we are better for it. We commissioned an artist to create a logo that differentiated us and made us a brand.
Our logo signifies our personality. We are anthropomorphic organisms that operate comfortably in the modern digital space – while embodying the ideas of Golden Age agencies.
Interviewing and hiring talent proportional to our standards is a very daunting task. However, because we created CDM Digital Advertising to eclipse our forerunner, we will consume our competitors with hellfire. We can do no less.
Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.

The Importance of Sales
It's hard to admit but it’s a mistake thinking that proficiency in artistic in creative work will bring customers and fame. Agency success must have dynamite graphics, clever, intuitive copy, fashioned into nimble campaigns are important. But, like all businesses advertising and marketing services will be ignored by the intended customer unless agency expertise is introduced to them.
What does that mean? Sell. Continue selling and sell some more. The more you sell the more cash and operating capital you have. Otherwise there is no sustainability. Most people assume that because an agency is good at creative work, things flow. That's not true.
An advertising agency must sell its product to the public. Unfailingly, a person in business needs exposure. The fastest way to achieve that is to engage in a marketing campaign -- anchored by advertising. A message will die as an idea unless it is sold to the public.
Likewise, an agency will die on the vine unless it sells its services. In our case, an array of advertising and marketing services that will assist a client business to grow its revenue.
Without a dedication to sales, no one will succeed. The interaction of business and ideas will melt as quickly as ice cream on a hot day. The immortal David Ogilvy said it best: “What good is it to be creative if what you create cannot sell?”
We're taking that to heart. Marketing consultation and advertising campaigns are our foremost sales challenge because it is our product.

This is commonly called a 'rant.' I want to impart a few words of wisdom to job seekers old and young.
Let's accept the reality that the economy has improved in the past three years significantly. Prosperity seems to strut in front of us on main street. Main street is my haunt. It's where I operate a business, along with my partner. We are good at what we do in advertising.
But, we genuinely care about our agency. Just because you have certain snot nose credentials (degrees of some type, agency experience, and so on) that these entitle you to darken our doors. they do not.
Ask yourself: Why should I let you in if you refuse to do the easiest thing in the world -- protect and respect our brand. Don't cop an attitude because you have not earned your way in anything. People have to learn not to assume my partner and I are low level 'recruiters.' No, we are the bosses.
Keep in mind that as you are interviewed by us or any other company, don't question motives. You're out of work or soon will be.
If asked what's the most important duty you have to the company there two answers: "Do my job. Respect what the brand stands for." If you can't do either, you'll spin your wheels in frustration as the next round of layoffs have your name on the top line.
We specialize in helping small companies move up in their market position.
It's not hard. Our success comes from avoiding the mistakes of others.
Before the reward there must be labor. You plant before you harvest. You sow in tears before you reap joy.

Leaving the Comfort Zone
Years ago, there was a television program that began with an opening refrain from the deep voice narrator that went, “Now it can be told.” It seems appropriate now.
For the last year, we contemplated the idea of moving to the East Coast. That makes sense when you realize LA is a hotbed of creativity and competitive. There are at least 1700 advertising agencies in the city.
If statistics are reliable, it’s no different in other heavily urban areas. We shall see, what we will see. Now it can be told.
Sometime in the fall and winter CDM Digital Advertising will become an agency operating from the West in LA, Seattle, and the American South from Georgia. As a founder I’m a little sad but LA will be stewarded by my wonderful partner. Who knows, she will probably do better than I did.
I think I impeded our staff and stunted growth. I don’t want to go through that again.
Its always the case that a change of environment makes a difference. Is a different step or bounce to your walk, a new attitude, and regained enthusiasm. There is talent and clients out there, and we will find them.
We just must come out of our circle of comfort and look. That is what moves are all about.
As we venture into the mid-point of another year of being in the agency business, we are bewildered at the schemes others engage in pretending to be 'agency owners' and ‘mentors.’
We are proud that CDM Digital does not lie to the public and that we remain transparent.
There are people on this medium and on YouTube selling BS about helping would-be members of this profession gain a foothold into advertising and its nuances and achieve ultimate wealth -- if only they would buy their materials. They promise to share the secret to making money. But it will cost you.
Honestly, these people are hucksters, hustlers and liars. Avoid them. Ask yourself this -- would you share the secret of success with innumerable strangers so that they can eclipse you and run you out of business? No, you wouldn't. Neither would we. Neither will these people either.
In the future, if you are intent on becoming a small creative agency owner, let us know and we'll give you sound advice for free. Remember, there's a limit on our time, but we love this profession and detest the hustlers that steal your dreams and money.

TBWA\Paris again balances minimalism with clear branding.
100% true. Word of mouth, social media, billboards. Our mind processes thousands of advertisements a day without knowing it.
Marketing is everywhere.
So today is #NationalInternDay.
Looking back and remembering the interns we had in the past brings a smile to my face. We had a diligent and unique team. They were all bright and filled with potential.
Guide, mentor and appreciate your interns. Take them seriously as these are individuals who are hungry for knowledge.
Each intern gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your own expertise. It is a wonderful bond that should not be taken lightly.
We have made an effort to help small business owners with their marketing. What is baffling is that while a business owner spends considerable time building a company, he or she refuses to consult with someone adept in marketing. That is, until a marketing problem may have become insurmountable.
We look at this as seeking a preventative approach -- avoiding disaster. Our approach requires gaining an understanding that business solution can't ignore 'business basics.' It's actually foundation. A business cannot exist without customers.
A business should assume customers want their needs fulfilled. So, if a customer knows what a business offers, it gives rise to both brand recognition and reliance.
None of it is by accident. It’s happens because of advertising.
That's what we do at CDM -- connect brands with consumers. The result is a stronger company, and satisfied buyer.
Wishing you all a festive and safe 4th of July.
