Martin Clunes recently announced the passing of Dodger, the talented Jack Russell who played Buddy on Doc Martin for ten series. Dodger retired in 2019 after developing dementia and passed away in 2023.
Known for his hilarious on-screen tension with Clunes’ famously dog-averse Dr. Ellingham, Buddy quickly became one of the show’s most endearing characters. Behind the scenes, Clunes took extra care with his four-legged co-star, even silently mouthing angry lines to avoid distressing him during filming.
Dodger was later succeeded by another Jack Russell named Taffy for the show’s final season, and while Taffy did a wonderful job, Buddy will always remain the true canine heart of Portwenn.

For that tiny amount, Americans enjoy an incredible range of educational programming for children, trusted news, and many of the wonderful British TV shows that have become audience favorites. Even viewers outside the U.S. benefit from this investment, as it helps support and encourage the continued creation of quality television.

Right now, that funding is under threat — and this isn’t a partisan issue. It’s about preserving something affordable and enriching that serves everyone, no matter their political views.
