She trusted the wrong person — and it cost her everything.
Kaylee Sawyer was 23 years old when a night meant for celebration turned into a nightmare. Vulnerable and alone, she accepted help from a man who appeared to be a campus safety officer — a uniform that signaled protection, authority, safety.
That man was Edwin Lara.
Instead of helping her, he brutally murdered Kaylee and tried to hide what he’d done. He fled, committed more violence, and was later captured and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Justice came — but far too late.
Kaylee’s family refused to let her death be meaningless. Out of their grief came change. New laws were passed to ensure campus security officers could no longer be mistaken for police, so no one else would ever place blind trust in the wrong uniform.
