“In 2020, we made the now infamous decision to shift our beloved print-only street rag to a hybrid social media friendly publication. As haunted as I may be by the decision to dive into the rushing river of digital sludge, I do not regret it. Not even a little. Because once the initial shock subsided, the floodgates opened. In a matter of months our creative coffers were filled with the incredible work of like minded individuals who yearned for an authentic platform to showcase their work, free and clear from the unnecessary bells and whistles of the modern day world wide web. The Pen Name had become a refuge for the lost creatives of the world:

Bring us your tired, your poor, your technologically challenged artists seeking communion in a wasteland of toxic vanity.

We had become the caretakers of a rapidly growing space that and its most pure was niche and slim, an intentionally bizarre quarterly meant to entertain. One last grasp of a dying medium before it was devoured completely by the machines. A novel concept that meant a tremendous deal to us personally, but as time marched on, it became too much to bear. We grew too quickly for a paper that was never built to operate as a large financial undertaking. With some of the most talented analog creators our science fiction garbage fire of a society had to offer, we documented eight extremely tumultuous years in modern American history. We put forth what we believed in our hearts to be a valiant and honorable effort, then we signed off. We regrouped. We thought long and hard about what we had accomplished and we took a much-needed deep breath, hopeful for a future that would allow us to breathe easier than it had in the past… Our hope was in vain.”

“Schools of tropical fish swim beneath me.  I see sea urchins along the ocean floor.  The shifting waves are cool.  My body is engaged, every muscle firing in tandem to ensure my snorkeling ability in the waters of Molokini, a crescent-shaped volcanic crater off the coast of Kaho’olawe.  As passengers aboard the mighty Calypso, “Maui’s Newest Super Spacious High-Tech Triple Deck Catamaran”, this is our first of two snorkeling destinations for the day.  Molokini creates a natural wave break where the local boats float bloated tourists to observe a mysterious world they would otherwise not be able to see.

A red flag wind advisory didn’t scare us away.  I wonder if it should have.  The waves are strong and steady, lifting and lowering our flipper’d mass of life jackets and flesh.  My eyes are peeled, trying to absorb every exceptional detail.  We’re packed in tight, like a school of dead fish on the surface.  I feel a large man and his small son, their fins flipping against my face.  I turn and duck away, turning over in the water to get above my feet.  Everywhere I look, the tourists swarm.  Claustrophobia strikes.  I swim off.  A lifeguard tells me to stay with the pack.  Is he mad?  I find the missus and suggest we head back.  The waves are picking up.  We make our way to the boat and I realize the most dangerous animal in this ocean is man…“

“I only watch the news when it’s bad news.  When they tell us something terrible about the world and force us to take part in its collective misery.  War is live on television in the 21st century.  Day and night, the suffering of millions plays on a loop.  For some sick reason I don’t have the time (or backbone) to unpack, I turn on the TV and watch.  I care about the world.  I want the world to care about me.  I want to be informed.  I want to write about the subjects that make me buzz, yet I feel guilty when I do.  I’m co-owner of this publication, should I not be able to express my views to the masses with the platform I helped create?  On the other hand, I went to a dark place the last time I got seriously invested in the problems of the world.  Every time my pesky adoration creeps back I dip beneath the surface and those closest to me feel the shift when it happens.  Like video footage of a missile attack on an apartment complex in Kyiv, I find the darkness interesting.   Barbaric, horrible, the worst we have to offer, but interesting.  I’m intrigued by the darkness.  And probably so are you…”
