Leonard Pitts, Jr., will be in Los Angeles, Thursday, July 25th, for a book signing at Book Soup in West Hollywood. I plan to be there and hope to see other friends of Leonard there as well. Leonard began his professional writing career at SOUL Newspaper about 50 years ago and continues a most prestigious writing career and is now fulfilling his passion to write novels. Let's show our Los Angeles, Fremont High School, USC Alum, our love and support.

The free-standing successor and next novel by the author of the critically acclaimed The Last Thing You Surrender, Leonard Pitts, Jr.'s 54 Miles launches forward twenty years to the fateful weeks of March 1965--from the infamous "Bloody Sunday" march at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma on the 7t...

Links Inc. Present Sandra Evers-Manly with Co-Founders Award for the Arts

Sandra Evers-Manly will receive the 2024 Co-Founders Award for The Arts from The Links, Inc., an international nonprofit volunteer service organization with a membership of more than 17,000 women.

The award will be presented on June 20 by Links National President Ethel Isaacs Williams, J.D., during the 44th Links National Assembly at the Ga***rd Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas. Recipients of the award are individuals who have made a significant impact on the lives of others and society as a whole by being standard bearers of truth and equality.

Evers-Manly is president and founder of the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC), former president of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). She is an Emmy-winning executive producer for the Best Science and Technology Documentary “Into the Unknown,” executive producer of “Deep Sky,” and the author of a children’s book, “Raised Up By Mrs. Manly and Her L’s”

According to President Williams, “Evers-Manly continues to chart a most distinguished career, with achievements that extend well beyond the corporate arena and into the realm of film and media. Her passion for the arts and storytelling, the commitment to amplify youth and diverse voices, and her keen understanding of the power of film to shape perceptions and inspire change, has made her a driving force and an undeniably deserving recipient of this award.”

As part of the award, Evers-Manly will receive a commissioned Elizabeth Catlett bronze sculpture and will be allowed to designate a charity to receive a monetary donation from the Links in her name.

“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this amazing recognition by Links, Inc., one of the most distinguished and cherished organizations in our country. The work of the Links has impacted and changed so many lives and to be honored with the Co-Founders Award For The Arts, my heart is full of gratitude,” said Evers-Manly.

“It comes with even more responsibility to continue the work to ensure Black representation in films and television, equity and equality while supporting the Arts.”

Don't miss this historic documentary on Stax Records. May 20 and 21, on HBO. I am so proud that I am still friends with Al Bell and Deannie Parker to this day. Real caring, Prophets of Soul music and artists.

In a trailer premiering exclusively with PEOPLE on Thursday, May 2, viewers get a sneak peek at the rise of Stax records, an in*******al record label that propelled the music of legendary artists like Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, The Staple Singers, Sam & Dave and more.

What a pleasure it was to handle publicity for Ray back in the day. He was always a good, appreciate and respectful gentleman. And he's still handsome and his voice outstanding. One of my many blessings.

Thank you Reggie Jackson! Your post brought back so many lovely memories. When I think of John Levy I immediately think of Joyce Miller, one of the first national record promotions women in the music industry. Joyce was my friend and my mentor before there was SOUL. She also introduced me to Motown's Ewart Abner, Cannonball and Nat Adderly, Nancy Wilson, and so many others. John Levy was truly a first and one of a kind. I can't stop seeing him with his then wife, Gail Fisher, the second Black female actress in a TV series, Mannix, in the 60's. His office was on the S/W/C of Beverly Boulevard one block east of Larchmont back then. That in itself was unusual back then. Maybe I'll try writing about this part of my life instead of wearing your eyes out on a FaceBook read. Check John Levy out! If you're interested in Black music history, you will be surprised at how much some of us had accomplished back in the days before AI. Enjoy your watch and the music.

This is something that I want to visit. Wondering why I saw nothing about this exhibit until a few minutes ago. How is it related to the Tupac Exhibition that was up quite some time ago? Who put this together? Is there a discount for elders?
I basically left the music business because of rap so many years ago. I'd like to have an open mind and see what's being shared here. My biggest concern about rap back in the day was the violence and lack of loyalty and self respect. Having grown up witnessing the character of elder gangsters who had honor and respect it was hard for me to deal with the lack of these positive aspects of the criminals that I was privileged to know.
I see great wealth that unfortunately was not realized back in my time. But is there any honor? Answers that I still would like to be open to.

Take a journey through a legendary music genre - Hip Hop in exhibition and celebrate 50 years of its making with us. Discover what awaits you here.

Today would have been Aretha Franklin's 82 birthday. I don't remember when we first met but still remember picking her up and driving her to SOUL Night at the Apartment Nightclub on Crenshaw. She, her sisters Carolyn and Erma, and Reverend C. L. Franklin, were always a part of my SOUL life. So many sweet memories. Photo taken in 1976 L - R: G. Fitz Bartley, Aretha, me and my husband Ken Jones. Takes my breath away that I'm the last one standing.
Happy Birthday Aretha! R.I.P.

You may find the attached podcast about Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 interesting. It was done a couple of years ago. I had forgotten about it and came across it this morning and listened as I was doing some online photo organizing.
I enjoyed hearing stories that I don't think about and might answer differently today. Hopefully you will be able to reach it through this link. If not, I'm sorry. Let me know what happens and what you think. Regina

Well, I finally finished and published my first book. It's a collection of mostly poetry and some prose written while endeavoring to heal in a poetry writing workshop led by TiOva Padron at the World Stage in Leimert Park. One of my proofreaders suggested I add a TW - Trigger Warning in the beginning. I didn't but am letting you know that it's a very revealing book about the realities of my life from very young up to the 2020 Presidential election. Now I'm actively working on my memoir that will have SOUL stories.

Check out fabulous fantastic guitarist Charles Fearing who I've known since he was in high school. Charles, my son Kenny Jones, Richard "Ricky" Wyatt and several others use to play in our garage on a regular basis. Watching family grow from youngsters to incredible musicians is truly a pleasure.
Scott Goldfine interviewed me on FUNKNSTUFF back, no clue what I may have said but check it out too.

Enjoyed watching Scott Goldfine interview Charles Fearing. I've known Charles since he was about 16 and playing the guitar in the house and garage with my son Kenny Jones, Ricky Wyatt and other youngest with a lot of soul. It was just a way of life that I have to smile about thinking back.

My friend Hassan Nicholas del Campo passed away a few days ago after a long bout with health complications. We hadn't been in contact much over the last few years but he was my best friend for much of my life. We met in jr high at John Burroughs and became close as we both were heavily involved with LA Youth, a teen newspaper in Los Angeles. He was the funniest and most innovative person I ever met. I can't think of another person I genuinely had more adventures with. We lived a lot of life in single moments. We made art and threw art shows, took insane trips to Vegas, and would sometimes just walk together for miles for the hell of it. He showed me how to be more comfortable with myself, and introduced me to new music I would have never found on my own. One of my favorite moments with him was in DTLA. We stopped a bus like we were going to get on and instead just started singing songs from The Little Mermaid. Half the bus and even the driver clapped and were cracking up. He made simple moments fun and special. Ultimately we grew apart and I didn't know how bad his health had gotten until last year. He was not open about a lot of things and tended to deal with a lot on his own. His friends rallied and did the best they could for him until he ultimately passed. I could write a novel about our time together but I am honestly still kind of in shock. Even when you know it is coming, death is surprising. I am thankful that he is no longer in pain and for the impact he had on my life. We are planning a memorial for him ala L.A.undry in a couple weeks and will post more information about that soon. There is also a GoFundMe to cover cremation and memorial costs. We only have a few days to pay before the cost starts going up so anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.

It's difficult to distill someone's life into a handful of paragraphs. For Hassan Nicholas Del … Jessica Price needs your support for Hassan's Memorial Funds
