Matthew Broderick & John Hughes making Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 1986.

According to Matthew Broderick, John Hughes was very dismayed early on in the making of Ferris Bueller and was missing his brat pack actors:

“Everybody was sitting around in a foul funk. It was like the world ended. John was very distraught because we had not shown any excitement in our wardrobe test. He felt that I looked dull and out of it. I thought the test was for the clothes, but it was also, I guess, to show that we were charming. And John was in a panic. He said, ‘I am not used to working with people who don’t- you don’t seem into it.'”

Well not long after Hughes’ fears were allayed by the wild chemistry the actors brought to their roles on and off screen and Bueller became his second most successful film of all time, following The Breakfast Club.

Join us for our benefit fundraiser screening of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on 35mm, Wednesday May 18th at 730pm @ the SMC Club. All revenues will go to Teens 4 Teens, established to provide assistance and aid to older Youth in the Los Angeles Foster Care System.

Hopefully you joined us last night for parts 1 & 2 of Olivier Assayas's stunning CARLOS. Tonight we screen Part 3 on 35mm at 8pm @ the SMC Club.

In Part 3, we follow Carlos's descent into hedonism, narcissism, laziness, temptation, and his ultimate downfall when he hides out in the Sudan, not to protest or fight for any cause, but just to buy himself more time to have s*x, drink, and ultimately lose any discipline or focus or sight of an objective or cause. Fun right?!

Humphrey Bogart’s makeup test for The Maltese Falcon, 1941.

John Huston intended to use a line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet to end his directorial debut The Maltese Falcon. However, it was reported that he hated the final scene using his intended line and it wasn’t until a conversation (and recommendation) from his lead Humphrey Bogart that lead him to draw from the Tempest instead. Bogart refers to the falcon statue as “the stuff dreams are made of,” mirroring Shakespeare’s line “we are such stuff as dreams are made on.”

Watch 2 John Huston classics, The Maltese Falcon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Friday, May 20th starting at 730pm @ the SMC Club.

Join us for a trip from the Shire to Mordor and back again for our Lord of the Rings Marathon on 35mm, Saturday, May 28th starting at 10am at the Million Dollar Theater.

That's right y'all, we're screening Peter Jackson's entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on 35mm in one day. At LA's very first movie palace.

And we'll have lunch and dinner tokens (stay tuned for those) so you can eat, drink, be merry at the Grand Central Market next door for the entire event.

When this live action trilogy was announced, it was far from being the slam dunk it might seem in retrospect. Peter Jackson was still considered a bit of an auteur gore-fest comedy director from New Zealand. The trilogy had never really had a full adaptation prior (the animated version of the 1970's only got through part of The Two Towers). And the copyright issue was such a nightmare, producers sued each other even after the movies came out.

But Peter Jackson burned with the fire to bring his sensibility to this story. And he had the brilliant realization that he should shoot the entire trilogy ALL at once in New Zealand's gorgeous locales to make the risk as manageable as possible.

Each movie, while remarkably faithful to the books, also showcased Peter Jackson's unparalleled ability to simultaenously scare, shock, thrill, and endear himself to the audience.

Fellowship of the Ring tells the start of the story as humble hobbit Frodo and his friend Sam Ganges are visited by wizard Gandalf and told they must embark on a journey to destroy a ring hobbit Bilbo Baggins has had in his possession since Bilbo's own adventures a generation before.

The forces of evil, headed by an unspeakably powerful and regenerating Sauron based in the evil dark land of Mordor, are gathering to avenge a loss generations ago that brought peace to Middle Earth.

Soon Frodo, Sam, and Gandalf are joined by world hardened yet good hearted warrior Aragorn (in a star-making turn by Viggo Mortenson), arrow shooting elf Legolas (hearthrob Orlando Bloom), axe wielding salty dwarf Gimli, and fellow hobbits Pippin and Merry , to form a fellowship to get the ring to the mountains of Mordor where it must be destroyed to stop the evil.

The Two Towers picks up right at the moment that the Fellowship has been scattered and divided. In this episode (this programmer's personal favorite of the three), we follow several stories at once as we see what has befallen of our Fellowship as they still struggle to get to Mordor. Frodo and Sam especially are trailed by a pathetic yet dangerous creature named Gollum (Andy Serkis in the role that proved to the world a CGI character could be emotionally engaging) who once possessed the ring. All the storylines converge at the fortress of Helm's Deep where the remaining members of the fellowship are challenged by the now fully assembled armies of darkness-thousands upon thousands of blood thirsty orcs-in what is still ONE of the greatest battle sequences in all of cinema.

Finally, in Return of the King, we see the sacrifices everyone must make to have any chance to prevent the now almost fully strong evil lord Sauron who can now see everything and know everything from possessing the ring which, if he gets it, will give him COMPLETE DOMINION over all living things.

While Aragorn, Gandalf, and the other members of the fellowship work to distract Sauron, Frodo and Sam, near exhaustion, despair, and death, finally make their way into Mordor where Sauron's great evil touches their very hearts.

A stunning conclusion to a generation's greatest trilogy. Join us at the Million Dollar Theater for a day of cinema and a journey as epic as the imagination. On 35mm! - Craig

Join us tonight in screening Gillo Pontecorvo's stunning, challenging, thought provoking 1966 classic The Battle of Algiers on 35mm! 5/12 at 8pm @ the SMC Club. Tix in bio.

Also, let's take a moment to appreciate how truly mind blowing Polish film poster design from the 1960s was. Here’s Jerzy Flisak’s 1968 design for Algiers. Flisak was one of the most remarkable Polish poster artists and satirical illustrators.

In the beginning, Secret Movie Club was just a 35mm print, a fold out table, and a vision. . .

. . .when it started in April 2016 with a midnight 35mm screening of Steven Spielberg’s RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK at the single screen 1920’s built Vista Theater in Los Feliz, California. Since then, we’ve grown into a 25K+ worldwide community of movielovers and moviemakers. From one movie a month in 2016, we now average between 4-7 movie screenings at three classic Los Angeles venues a week. We always strive to show movies shot on film ON FILM! We also program conversations, debates, filmmaker interviews to bring the film community together to discuss the most important cinema issues of the day. We also have a weekly podcast (Secret Movie Club podcast avail on Apple/Google Podcasts/Stitcher/Spotify/Podbean), a website with a movie store of over 250+ original limited edition movie poster designs (www.secretmovieclub.com), an online short film festival, and more. We’d love for you to join our growing community as we work to screen great movies of all kinds as well as promote moviemaking so the next generation of cinema can get started making the great movies of the present and future!
