• Psychologist Michael Tomasello once said, “Fish are born expecting water, and humans are born expecting culture.” Over countless eons, fish have evolved in an environment in which water was central to every aspect of their being, and they develop accordingly. A fish’s body, its behavior, and its perception of the world are wholly inseparable from its existence in water. Over the last 2 million years, human development has evolved as a system that is inseparable from the linguistic, socially mediated, and constructed structures, institutions, and beliefs that make up the human niche.

“What makes (humans) really different is our ability to put our heads together and to do things that neither one of us could do alone, to create new resources that we couldn't create alone. It's really all about communicating and collaborating and working together.” — Michael Tomasello

_____ “It matters what matters we use to think other matters with; it matters what stories we tell to tell other stories with; it matters what knots knot knots, what thoughts think thoughts, what descriptions describe descriptions, what ties tie ties. It matters what stories make worlds, what worlds make stories.”

_____ Carrie Mae Weems “The Shape of Things” Africa, 1993.
〰️
Since the late 1970s, Carrie Mae Weems has challenged society’s stereotypes about gender, race, and class through photographs and texts she often assembles with objects into compelling installations. During her first trip to Africa in 1993, she photographed the vestiges of slavery along the coast of Ghana and Senegal as well as the entry ways, towers, and corridors of Djénné, Mali, one of the oldest urban sites in Western Africa. She was particularly taken by the city’s distinctive, ancient architecture and the buildings’ ability to suggest gender specificity, "male and female space." In this summary work from Weems’s Africa Series, she flanked a detail image of a mosque and its protruding towers with two close-up views of sensual entrances and openings on the facades of granaries. She skillfully created both a beautiful formal record of a physical place and its culture and a stimulating narrative that evokes identity and human interaction.

_____ Shell talismans, symbols of birth, good fortune for life, and resurrection. For centuries shells have played an important role in burial ceremonies around the world. One theory goes that the shell, being from the seashore, is not fully of the land and is also not fully of the sea, an idea that corresponds to what many believe death is – that the deceased person is no longer fully of the world, but is also not fully gone. And much as the beautiful shell persists after the animal inside is gone, many believe some form of spirit may persist after the earthly form has perished. The shell and the soul as eternal reminders that we did, indeed, exist.

_____ Lola Álvarez Bravo, 1949. The weights we carry will constantly shift and the truths we hold onto will slowly but surely fade. Delicate as it may be, balance is what we must cling to the hardest because even when everything seems to be falling apart, who we are in times of need is what will always stay the same.

Lola Álvarez Bravo was the first female Mexican photographer known for her surreal documentation of Mexico's people, cities, and villages.
