Close ups of a pair of new ALPS analog sticks, which come stock in all PlayStation 5 Dualsense controllers.
Motion is detected when tiny metal pieces on the white disk make contact with the black ring.
Overtime these rings wear down and the result is stick drift. Hall effect joysticks detect motion using magnets, and since the magnets never touch, they will never be worn down through friction. Because of this, controllers that use Hall effect joysticks are essentially immune to stick drift.
