She was never just the girl in the white dress.

On a cold New York sidewalk in the fall of 1954, the cameras rolled as a subway train rumbled beneath her feet and that famous skirt billowed upward. The crowd cheered. The flashbulbs exploded. Joe DiMaggio, watching from the sidelines, turned away in quiet fury. The world saw pure glamour. Marilyn Monroe felt something closer to exposure.

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, she spent her childhood shuttling between foster homes and an orphanage while her mother struggled with mental illness. She married at sixteen to avoid being sent back into the system. She worked in a wartime factory, was discovered by a photographer, and slowly, deliberately, reinvented herself. She chose the name Marilyn from a Broadway actress she admired and Monroe from her mother’s maiden name. The platinum hair, the breathy voice, the walk—none of it was accidental. She built the image the way an artist builds a portrait, brushstroke by careful brushstroke.

What fewer people remember is how hard she fought to be taken seriously inside that image. In 1955, tired of being underpaid and typecast, she walked away from her 20th Century Fox contract, boarded a plane under the alias Zelda Zonk, and founded Marilyn Monroe Productions. She was only the second woman in Hollywood history, after Mary Pickford, to head her own production company. She studied Method acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, carrying a deep hunger to be more than a pinup. She kept a personal library of more than four hundred books—Joyce, Aristotle, Marx, poetry. She once told an interviewer she wanted to be “a good actress, a true actress. An artist, with integrity.”

Her career delivered both the spectacle the public craved and the proof she demanded of herself. *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* and *How to Marry a Millionaire* made her a superstar. *The Seven Year Itch* turned a single night’s filming into cinema history. Then came *Bus Stop*, the first film she made under her own company. As Cherie, the fragile, hopeful saloon singer with dreams larger than her circumstances, she stripped away the glitter. Critics who had dismissed her were forced to look again. She followed it with the comic brilliance of *Some Like It Hot* and the aching vulnerability of *The Misfits*, working opposite Clark Gable, the man she had once imagined might be her father.

One of the most moving chapters of her life came far from Hollywood. In February 1954, newly married to DiMaggio, she traveled to Korea to entertain American troops. Over four days she performed ten shows for nearly 100,000 soldiers, often in freezing temperatures, talking with them afterward, eating in the mess hall, refusing the distance of stardom. “I have never felt like a star before in my life,” she said. For a woman who had spent so much of her childhood feeling invisible, those nights offered something rare: the sense that she was seen, and that she could give something real in return.

Marilyn Monroe died on August 5, 1962, at thirty-six. The image she created still fills screens and imaginations. But the woman behind it—the one who studied, who fought for creative control, who read deeply, who tried to turn pain into art—remains the more extraordinary story.

She taught us that even the brightest light can carry the quietest longing for something true.

Remembering Sir Alec Guinness, who passed away 26 years ago today on August 5, 2000, at the age of 86. The Academy Award winner for *The Bridge on the River Kwai* is also remembered for playing eight different roles in *Kind Hearts and Coronets* and for his iconic turn as Obi-Wan Kenobi in *Star Wars*.

Born in London in 1914 as Alec Guinness de Cuffe—his birth certificate left the father’s name blank—he began by writing advertising copy before turning to the stage. By the late 1930s he was performing with the Old Vic.

War interrupted his career. He enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1941, received his commission the next year, and commanded a landing craft. On July 9, 1943, he put 200 men ashore at Cape Passero during the invasion of Sicily. Later he ferried supplies and agents to the Yugoslav partisans and brought their wounded back.

David Lean cast him in six films, beginning with *Great Expectations* (1946) and Fagin in *Oliver Twist*, then Colonel Nicholson in *The Bridge on the River Kwai* (which earned him the Oscar), followed by *Lawrence of Arabia* and *Doctor Zhivago*. At Ealing Studios he became Britain’s comic genius: eight members of one doomed family in *Kind Hearts and Coronets*, the mild-mannered clerk of *The Lavender Hill Mob* (another Oscar nomination), *The Man in the White Suit*, and *The Ladykillers*.

Knighted in 1959, he won a Tony for *Dylan* in 1964, received an honorary Oscar in 1980 for his contribution to the art of screen acting, and was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship in 1989. A new generation who knew none of that discovered him as Obi-Wan Kenobi and secured him a fifth Oscar nomination. He married Merula Salaman in 1938 and remained with her for 62 years until his death; she followed him the following October.

Martin Sheen turns 86 today. Born Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez in Dayton, Ohio, on August 3, 1940, he has earned three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe, and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989.

The seventh of ten children, he was the son of a Galician father and an Irish mother who first met in a citizenship class. He adopted the professional name Martin Sheen to find acting work in New York and never made the change legal—a choice he later expressed regret over. His breakthrough on Broadway came with *The Subject Was Roses* in 1964, earning a Tony nomination; he later repeated the role in the 1968 film version.

*Badlands* (1973) brought him the Best Actor prize at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. His portrayal of Captain Willard in *Apocalypse Now* (1979) received a BAFTA nomination and is still regarded as one of the decade’s most talked-about performances. Over his career he has collaborated with directors including Coppola, Malick, Scorsese, Spielberg, Attenborough, Nichols, and Stone. In 2025 *The Independent* named him the finest actor never to have received an Academy Award nomination.

As President Josiah Bartlet on *The West Wing* (1999–2006) he collected six Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe in 2001, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards across seven seasons. He then spent another seven seasons on *Grace and Frankie*. He directed a single feature, *Cadence* (1990), in which he appeared opposite two of his sons.

Off-screen he has long volunteered in parish soup kitchens and youth programs and has backed the Catholic Worker movement ever since he relied on free meals at its New York house as a struggling young actor. Marquette University conferred an honorary doctorate on him in 2003 in recognition of that service; the University of Dayton did the same in 2015.
