If you don’t have the time, energy or money, don’t get a pet
So many of you are shocked that you need to put effort in, or that your pet’s well-being is your responsibility. People are even here complaining that their pets smell. Give them a bath ffs. They’re animals, what did you expect?

Training takes work. Proper care takes time and costs money. You are responsible for the creatures in your care. If you can’t handle it, don’t get one.

Edit: apparently it wasn’t clear, but I’m not talking about a financial situation changing or anything along those lines. I’m talking about people who won’t have the capacity to own an animal an get one anyway, or people who don’t understand basic care and adopt an animal anyway. That’s my issue.

Please stop putting words in my mouth. I’m talking about people who will get a puppy and get shocked when it pi**es everywhere and bites because they thought they came trained for someone reason, or people who will put a goldfish in a tiny bowl because they can’t afford a tank.

What's the cutest thing your pet does?
When I get back from walking my dog, I feed her. She knows it's food time when we get back inside, so she jumps around all excited. I tell her to, "Go bedroom," which is where her food bowl is. She does, and then she lies down. I put her food in the bowl, and she waits for me to say "OK" before she eats. I think it's adorable.

This is my most popular social media post post ever in terms of comments and my second-most (so far) in terms of upvotes / likes. I'm trying to read all the comments, which have made my day. Thank you all so much for putting a much-needed smile on my face.

i feel like i’m the only cat owner who has to live like this
i’m so jealous of other cat owners who can freely decorate their home, leave s**t out in the open and just not have to worry about any of this.

me on the other hand, i can’t even leave a calendar out on my desk because my cats would bite the spring part of it and eat it. my room is like a blank canvas, empty walls, zero decors, just a desk and a bed. thanks to my cats

i cant have any plants or flowers in the house because they will 100% eat the entire thing up.

i can’t use clumping litters because they used to eat their litter so much. i’m forced to use a non clumping litter and these will run your pockets DRYYY. they’re way more expensive cuz i specifically use paper pellets and not pine pellets.

one of my cats has a condition called pica which explains this insane behavior. they just turned 2 years old and i was honestly expecting them to calm down by this age but boy was i wrong. (i adopted them when they were 2 months old)

the only reason why he’s not in the ER or possibly dead from internal blockage is because i’ve become such an anxious & paranoid freak and literally got rid of EVERYTHING in the house. plants, flowers, home decors, anything with strings, laundry dryer sheets, trash cans…kitchen rags…. even tho it caused so much inconvenience and stress in my life, i just couldnt continue seeing him get sick. he’d get sick SO often as a kitten bc of all the s**t he would eat without my knowledge.

ive been living like this for the past two years but hey, at least my cat hasnt had any injuries or accidents since… right?😭

What's the story behind your pet's name?
Doesn't have to be a pet you have now. Can be a pet you used to have.

I have a had quite a few pets over the years ranging from fish and snails to chickens and ducks to goats and horses to dogs and cats, but some of them had names that we picked for humor.

We had a lot of horses when I was growing up, but one in particular always stood out. We called her Shasta, named so because "she hasta lay in your lap, she hasta see what you're doing, she hasta follow you."

Why do people want doodles?
Hi, I have been wondering about this for a while, and now I thought I would ask here why people want doodles? These dogs are all backyard bred and/or bred in puppy mills. There are no standards for these types of dogs, so what you'll get in personality and look is going to be a gamble. Also, most people breeding doodles most likely don't have all the health testing done on their breeding dogs that poodles and (for example) golden retrievers have to have done before breeding. And before anyone comments that "they don't like the look of a poodle and so they must get a doodle" or something along those lines, you do know that you can cut a poodle's coat in many different ways, one of which is that doodle look you like.

People who won't take their pets to the vet: is it generational?
Just a shout of empathy for lots of young people who post on here because they can't convince their parents to take their pets to the vet. When I was growing up, my parents were super stubborn about taking our cat to the vet for regular checkups. I felt like I nagged them constantly about it, but they wouldn't budge. My parents had plenty of money, so I've never been able to figure out what the issue was. Fear? Anxiety? Laziness? I can't diagnose it.

You'd better believe my two dogs go to the vet for annual checkups, get all their shots, and generally get doted on like children.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the interesting conversation. I think those of you who point out economic factors are probably correct in most cases, which is sad. If I won the Powerball I'd set up a charity to help people pay vet bills. For others, like my parents, they might be just cheap: there's no amount of money that can convince a miser they can afford something.

Is there a breed you personally won’t own?
My question mainly pertains to dogs but all pet breeds are welcome to chime in. Is there a breed you personally will avoid owning?

For myself personally I will never intentionally own a Dalmatian or any working breed. Shepard’s, Collies, Cattle Dogs, ect.

The reason I won’t own a Dalmatian is because of a traumatic experience in my youth where I got mauled by one. As an adult I found out they are also largely in**ed and unhealthy so that’s an additional reason. And I won’t own any working breeds because I don’t have the space, time or energy to support their needs. I think they are fantastic dogs but I won’t be a good human for them.

Edit: Pure breeds and intentionally ill breeds like pugs ect. Are also on my no list.

Folks who work at shelters - are people often lying about why they’re surrendering a pet?
My husband and I board dogs in our home. Last summer we had a brother and sister drop off a Great Pyrenees and Husky mix. The dog ended up being very, very aggressive/reactive. It was a horrible situation where the owners wouldn’t come pick the dog up, it bit someone in our household, and I had to get my lawyer involved. Eventually we had no option but to call animal control to pick the dog up.

Anyway, the incident happened in the summer and in the fall I get a phone call from a local humane society. They were asking me about my experience with this dog. Apparently the owners surrendered it, and they gave the shelter our contact information…

I asked what the reason for surrendering ended up being. They said someone in the family had allergies toward the dog and they could no longer keep it. I highly doubt that’s the actual reason though. The humane society confirmed the dog was very reactive and hard to handle and they asked me a lot of questions.

This was a very disturbing and saddening situation honestly. I suspect something else serious happened related to the dog that led to it ultimately being surrendered. I’m wondering though, how common it is that people surrender dogs and lie about the reasoning and what the consequences are when rehoming the dog?

Can the humane society legally not give me my dog back after I got arrested?
HELP I was walking my dog when I got arrested had to sit 30 days in jail the officer took my dog to humane society. A week later came to the jail and informed me that if I didn't sign over my dog to the humane society that he would probably put that be put down, told me my dog hadn't been out of the kennel all week. I was in contact with humane society the whole time I was in jail kept telling him I only have 30 days this day I'm getting released the day I get out I fill out the application like they told me I had to for adoption called yesterday to see if I could go see my dog. Was told that they would let me see him today but I had to call for a Time called this morning got informed that I will not be able to see my dog as they felt it would be too confusing for him she also informed me that she had not received my application for adoption. I had informed her that I had also located that registration for him to be my service animal but still was refused to visit. If that officer went to said that they would probably end up putting my dog down I would have never ever relinquished my rights can they legally keep my dog and give him to somebody else

My roommate took up both of the pet slots knowing I wanted a dog as well.
My roommate/best friend (20f) and I (20f) have been living together for two years but moved into our current place may of last year. This new place only allows us to have a maximum of two pets. She has a now 3 year old cat. For the like like 5 months I have been trying to get a dog and every time I have mentioned it she has shot me down because we “don’t have enough space”. But this last week she has been talking about getting a dog herself (even tho she already has a pet) and I reminded her that I have been trying to get a dog myself and she just changed the subject. Now she has randomly brought home a dog and I asked her if she was going to be mine and she just said idk. She brought it home and basically claimed the dog as hers and didn’t even give me the choice. I am at a loss because I don’t want to cause tension and she already brought the dog home. I now can’t get my dog and she has two pets at our shared place.
