$100,000 price tag on H-1B visas

Starting Sept. 21, U.S. employers must pay a $100,000 fee for H-1B visa entries under a proclamation signed by President Donald Trump. The administration says the rule addresses program abuse in tech and STEM fields.

Applies to workers outside the U.S. seeking entry after the deadline. Officials clarified that current H-1B holders in the U.S. are exempt, but travel abroad could complicate reentry.

In Philippine folklore, the Kapre is feared as a dark, tobacco-smoking giant in the trees.

But history suggests he may have been no monster at all, but enslaved men brought to Manila’s Parian slave market during Spanish rule. Many escaped into the forests, where Spaniards and friars branded them cafres, a term that later evolved into Kapre.

The Kapre stands as a metaphor for how suppressed truths were transformed into fear, just as today’s myths about corruption such as “wala namang mangyayari” and “the system will crush you” keep citizens from confronting abuse.

Editorial: The Senate Saga on Corruption

A garage of 40 cars. A Rolls-Royce bought for its built-in umbrella. A Ferrari in flood-prone Bulacan.

These are not symbols of progress. They are symbols of corruption, excess, and betrayal - paid for at the expense of ordinary Filipinos who wade through floodwaters and risk disease because promised projects were never delivered.

As Buwan ng Wika comes to a close, we remember the legacy of President Manuel L. Quezon, the Father of the National Language, who believed that a shared language could unite a divided nation.

Filipino is the official national language of the Philippines, based on Tagalog but enriched by other local dialects and foreign influences.

It is the living voice of our identity at home and across the world.

Golf in the Philippines has always been more than a sport. On its most exclusive fairways, trust is built, alliances are sealed, and legacies are passed from one generation to the next.

At Manila Golf & Country Club, entry does not come with an application. It comes with a share so rare that in June 2024 one sold for ₱200 million (US $3.6 million), the highest in Philippine golf history.

Membership is tightly capped, newcomers are rarely admitted, and going rates now hover within that rarefied range. For the nation’s elite, golf is more than a game, it is the quiet language of power.
