Cynthia Covert, The Disabled Diva Welcome to my chronic life.

Sharing the real, raw, & ridiculous side of living with fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, endometriosis, a botched hysterectomy & abdominal pain that's waiting for a diagnosis.

“I don't know” doesn't bother me nearly as much as what sometimes comes after it.

I don't expect every doctor to have the answer.

What breaks me is when not knowing becomes the answer.

When there is no curiosity left.
No next direction.
No “let's figure out who might know.”

Just another appointment ending with me still living inside the same unexplained problem.

Sometimes patients don't need certainty.
We need someone willing to stay in the question with us.

This has been one of the hardest changes for me to accept.

For years, chronic illness meant good days and bad days.

I could rest before something, make plans around my body and hope the preparation would buy me a better day.

That isn't how my body works anymore.

Now “better” often doesn't mean good. It means the pain backed off enough for me to think more clearly, laugh more easily or breathe around it for a while.

Sometimes chronic illness changes the rules after you've already spent years learning how to play.

Some people become so good at functioning in pain that others forget how much pain they're functioning in.

They may work through it.
Laugh through it.
Carry on conversations through it. Sit quietly through it.

So when someone who has spent years adapting to pain finally tells you they've reached their limit, don't measure their words against how calm they look.

Listen to what they're telling you.

The pain is still here.

The PowerPoint presentation explaining it for the 847th time has been canceled. 😂

Please refer to the previous 847 presentations.

Chronic illness changes more than what a body can do.

It can change how you dress, how you move, how you spend your days, where you go, how you work, how you socialize and eventually how you see yourself.

I know I can't get my old body back.
But it would be nice to just want to catch a glimpse of myself and think, there you are.

who can handle the pain better than I can handle everything I'm expected to do while in pain?

Hair done. Makeup on. Dressed. Smiling.

Those are things I did.
They are not vital signs.

Sometimes looking put together is something I do because it makes me feel a little more like myself.

Sometimes it's because I wanted one damn picture where illness wasn't the first thing I saw.

Please don't confuse the effort I made to look good as evidence that I must feel good.

What do you want to eat?
What time should we leave?
Do you want to do this next week?
Can you make that phone call?

On a better day, those are simple questions.

When severe pain is already consuming most of my processing power, they can feel like someone handed me a final exam I didn't study for.

Sometimes I don't need more options.
I need fewer decisions.

Am I the only one
who occasionally realizes I stopped doing something years ago and never noticed when I stopped?
