Do you EQ and saturate toms to make them fit? A common mistake is adding too much low end. Another is making them too bright, so they don't sound part of a kit. Carve into toms hard, squash them down; they need to be big without actually being big. It's a challenge!

Here's a peek at my mixing template. I use 8 VCA faders, like “food groups.” Each track routes into one of those 8 folders: drums, percussion, bass, guitars A, guitars B, keys, lead vocals, and background vocals.
