Wishing you a bright and meaningful .

Kwanzaa is an annual week-long celebration of African and African American culture. It honors pan-African culture, community and families, and their respective contributions to the world at large.
Kwanzaa begins Dec 26 and lasts through Jan 1 and honors the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) of African culture: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith).

Repost from IG Costumer Valerie Keiser.
Palm Royale, Season 2, Episode 3:

Norma is asserting her dominance again, overseeing the time-honored tradition of the Dellacorte Portrait Ceremony.

We don’t get to see Norma’s costume in its full glory, as she’s seated in shadows for most of the episode, but we all had so much fun working out the details with Alix Friedberg. The gown is made from a green and gold metallic brocade, lined with green silk habotai to keep it lightweight. Because, the robe she wears over it is made from 5 yards of a gorgeous, but heavy, emerald velvet. It has these dramatic, elongated pleated sleeves, and is lined with an iridescent silk taffeta.

Kit Scarbo found a handful of these perfect golden, bejeweled appliqués for the shoulders, and Alan Beumer hand-stitched them in place.

Her turban was made by the wizards in the hat shop at , out of the same silk taffeta used to line the robe.

Anyone who’s ever sewn velvet will understand the mental state we were in by the time Nevena Todorovic got to photo #5. We’d each taken turns wrestling with it, with varying degrees of success. But in the end, we conquered it. 🏆
And then we made 4 more for the stunts. 😅

Oh, and to any OG Carol Burnett fans… Did you notice a little bit of an homage in this costume? 🥰

IATSE is deeply alarmed by President Trump’s Executive Order to sue and investigate state laws which regulate artificial intelligence (AI) and directing federal agencies to withhold federal funding from states with AI laws deemed to be unfavorable.

IATSE agrees with the order’s assertion that the Trump Administration must act with Congress to establish a national framework for AI regulation and the recognition that a federal policy is needed to ensure copyrights are respected. However, preventing states from passing and enforcing AI protection before Congress acts is an invitation for lawlessness that directly threatens IATSE members and their economic livelihoods.

Recent attempts to roll back and ban state AI protections were rejected overwhelmingly by Congress and remain deeply unpopular with the public. Earlier this week, IATSE and the arts, entertainment, and media industry unions applauded the decision by Congress to exclude an AI moratorium from being forced into the National Defense Authorization Act and urged the Administration to reconsider similar attempts to limit the rights of state governments to protect their constituents.

AI has the potential to transform the entertainment industry and many others, but without clear safeguards, it poses serious risks to American workers’ jobs, privacy, and safety. The order and proposed moratorium on state-level policy both threaten to roll back essential worker protections and undermine ongoing bipartisan efforts to ensure AI technologies are developed and deployed responsibly.

Policymakers across the political spectrum have taken important steps to protect Americans from harmful AI through fair, transparent, and responsible AI standards at the state level. For example, Colorado’s Algorithmic Discrimination Act addresses bias and discrimination in automated decision-making, while Florida has implemented policies governing AI in Political Advertising, non-consensual deep-fakes, and Automated Decision-Making. Just yesterday, New York signed two bills into law to protect consumers and boost AI transparency in the film industry.

Rather than seeking to eliminate the only safeguards we have, the federal government should learn from these state efforts to develop a strong, comprehensive framework that ensures AI benefits workers and society.

The Executive Order’s approach takes this harm one step further, seeking to punish states that take action and proactively address pitfalls of AI technology and use, leaving workers vulnerable to misuse and displacement.

IATSE urges policymakers to reject any attempt to strip states of their right to protect working people and to ensure that AI regulation at all levels prioritizes fairness, transparency, and accountability.

Palm Royale, Season 2, Episode 2:

There weren’t as many custom-made pieces in Episode 2, but I wanted to take a moment to appreciate the skirt suit Nevena Todorovic made for Evelyn’s courthouse wedding to Eddie.

It was made from a metallic brocade in pink, cream and rose gold, and Kit Scarbo found pink silks that were a perfect match— 4-ply crepe-back satin for the jacket lining, and habotai to line the skirt. The jacket closes with a hidden hook & eye at the front, flanked by two pavé bejeweled buttons as an accent.

The blouse is mostly hidden, but it’s a bias-cut, sleeveless cowl neck in the same crepe-back satin used to line the jacket.

The purse she carries was a late-game addition— Alan Beumer managed to make that so quickly that we didn’t have time to take photos of the process!

Native American Heritage Day is a civil holiday observed on the day after Thanksgiving in the United States.

In 2009, President Barack Obama signed “The Native American Heritage Day Resolution 2009,” designating the Friday after Thanksgiving as “Native American Heritage Day.” The resolution had unanimous support in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

In signing H.J. Res. 40 into law, President Obama stated, “I encourage every American to join me in observing Native American Heritage Day... It is also important for all of us to understand the rich culture, tradition, and history of Native Americans and their status today, and to appreciate the contributions that First Americans have made and will continue to make to our Nation.”

Palm Royale, Season 2, Episode 1:

Maxine is suddenly back at the Palm Royale for the new season, in a vibrant, swingy matching set. An eerily cheerful sight, considering the chaos we left her in at the Beach Ball!

Alix Friedberg designed this outfit in layers. The outer layer of the top and pants are made of a yellow nylon lace, with delicate pleated flowers attached along the border. Each flower has a single yellow rhinestone in the center. We removed and reapplied a lot of those flowers to get them just right.

Under the lace was a layer of n**e silk georgette which provided that wonderful swing as she frolicked into the building. BUT, we actually made two versions of this outfit! Because once Maxine stepped inside, we start to realize we’re seeing some kind of fantasy of hers. Suddenly everything is sparkly and lavish, as Robert performs his Big Number.

So the second version, in order to usher her into that lavish sparkle, is instead lined with a heavily-sequined stretch illusion. And under that, the top has ANOTHER layer, of iridescent lamé organza. This layer is only seen in a quick flash, as Maxine whisks that top away, revealing the bra top. Ruth Stockl carefully rigged the tear-away top with a large, single snap at the back neck, and several small magnets down the right side seam. All these subtle details gradually bring us into the fantasy as it evolves for Maxine.

The bra top uses the same sequined stretch illusion, over a layer of coutil for stability, and silk crepe de chine for lining. Alan Beumer had a lot of hand stitching to do on that top, to wrangle all those beads and rhinestones into place!

Getting these fabrics to play nice with each other was NOT easy, but Ruth Stockl, Alan Beumer
and Nevena Todorovic are pros! We also added bits of soft, thin, n**e spandex in strategic places inside this costume, for comfort— These fabrics are NOT soft, and Kristen had a lot of dancing to do in them!
