NASA confirmed
NASA has recently confirmed the presence of a second moon-like object orbiting Earth, known as a quasi-moon. This celestial body, officially named 2025 PN7, is a small asteroid that has been moving in sync with Earth’s orbit for years. Unlike our natural Moon, it doesn’t orbit Earth directly but shares a similar path around the Sun, making it appear as if it’s circling Earth. These types of space companions are rare and temporary — often staying in Earth’s gravitational influence for a few decades before drifting away.
The asteroid is very small compared to our Moon, only a few meters in diameter, and poses no threat. Its discovery offers scientists a unique opportunity to study near-Earth objects and orbital dynamics. While this doesn’t change the fact that Earth technically has one true Moon, having a quasi-moon makes our planetary neighborhood even more fascinating.
