MICHAEL ST. JOHN
At the age of 12, Michael St. John, singer, was signed by the iconic musician PAUL WHITEMAN to appear weekly on his TV show (WFIL-NBC) in Philadelphia. During the same period, radio host, STAN LEE BROZA, signed St. John to perform on his weekly radio show (WCAU-CBS) resulting in his appearing on TV on Saturday and RADIO, Sunday.
During the close of the Second World War, St. John appeared with USO shows entertaining at camps and veteran hospitals.
During his last year attending Swarthmore High, he was one of three winners to appear at the Philadelphia Bulletin newspaper Music Festival to take place at the city's Municipal Stadium. Guests stars also scheduled for that appearance included: DINAH SHORE, LOUIS ARMSTRONG, DUKE ELLINGTON, JOHNNY RAY, ALEC TEMPLETON, FRANCIS FARMER, ED SULLIVAN as HOST and the famed PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA accompanied all guest performers.
WHEN attending THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, he was quickly admitted in the TROJAN MARCHING BAND, selected, along with the future METROPOLITAN star MARILYN HORN to perform for PRESIDENT DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER at the HOLLYWOOD BOWL. Soon after, the duo was asked to perform for the noted Russian composer DEMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH who was visiting America, especially, Los Angeles for the first time.
Soon after this, St. John signed to appear in MUSICAL “CARMEN JONES”, the first major musical of its kind with an all Afro-American cast (1953). The film stared HARRY BELLEFONTE, PEARL BAILEY, DIAHANN CAROLL and DOROTHY DANDRIDGE who was nominated for an OSCAR in the Best Actress category. The film was nominated in the Best film Musical category, the first in film history.
FOLLOWING THIS, St. John signed to do the following: CARNAVAL ISLAND (EBONY THEATRE), THE DESK SET (Broadway comedy starring SHIRLEY “Hazel” BOOTH, THE MACADO (musical), FINIAN’S RAINBOW starring DAVID WAYNE, MEMBER OF THE WEDDING starring ETHEL WATERS.
KNX radio: Appeared on half-hour musical show as the main singer, with GERALD GORDON (Las Vegas) as director.
ST. JOHN was signed as DIRECTOR at NBC the first Afro American recognized in that category. He was also signed at 20th Century Fox in the studio’s Publicity Department to promote such films as VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, THE BIBLE and SAND PEBBLES with STEVE McQUEEN. For that assignment, he had to travel to Taiwan to cover some of the shooting as well as promote the major stars of the film.
DURING THE 1970s, St. John was signed by PLAYERS INT’L as Editor in Chief for 3 major entertainment publications: PLAYERS, NOW and MICHAEL ST. JOHN’S NIGHT BEAT (to rival that of RONA Barretts), AGAIN, the FIRST AFRO-AMERICAN to have his name as part of the publication’s logo. This opened doors for numerous national TV and radio tours appearances I.e., co-hosting for a week on the JOE FRANKLIN SHOW in New York City, OPRAH WINFREY SHOW when she was hosting in Baltimore, Maryland as well as TED TURNER at his home-based station in ATLANTA, GA. and several radio and TV stations in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Boston, Mass.
DURING the 1950s, KDIA radio located in the San Francisco-Oakland area signed St. John as its daily entertainment reporter and interviewer. Later, he also signed to host his own TV show for channel 48 in Los Gatos, CA.
During St. John’s years in the San Francisco area, he managed to attend DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY, resulting in his receiving a Ph.D. in music composition. He composed symphonic work supported by many musicians from the famed SAN FRANCISCO ORCHESTRA, which he received a GRAMMY, FLIGHT OF COLUMBIA 7 and DANCES OF REMEMBRANCE commemorating all of those killed in the fated a shuttle. While in San Francisco, the musical CHASING THE BLUES was written for ST. JOHN (the book was written by writer JEFF NISHIMURA) but the music was written by ST. JOHN. It received rave revues.
WHEN RETURNING TO HOLLYWOOD, St. John created sitcom STUDIO HOUSE, starring RUTA LEE, DEBRA WILSON; Pre-Broadway play with music I FEEL SIN COMIN’ ON with LEON ISAAC KENNEDY, (possibly TREVOR NOAH from DAILEY SHOW), MARLA “THE JEFFERSONS” GIBBS and RUTA LEE; currently working on miniseries treatment based on his book HOLLYWOOD THROUGH THE BACK DOOR.
